"I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." --Nathan Hale

"[G]ather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime.... [L]et us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us as sacred charges upon the Nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan." --General John Logan, General Order No. 11, 5 May 1868

Memorial Day is reserved by American Patriots as a day to honor the service and sacrifice of fallen men and women who donned our Armed Forces uniforms with honor. We at The Scottsdale Activist pay our humble respects to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice as members of the U.S. Armed Forces. We will remember you always.

General George Patton insisted, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."

Founding Patriot John Adams said: "I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth more than all the means...." Indeed it is!

Please pray for our American Armed Forces standing in harm's way around the world, and for their families -- especially families of those, who have given their life in defense of American liberty, while prosecuting the war with Jihadistan.

~ The Writing is on the Wall

As you may have noticed, the local papers are already starting to speculate about who will run for Council and Mayor in 2008.  For once I agree with the papers, this is important and we need to start thinking about the 2008 elections now.  That is because, for those of us who care about Scottsdale’s character and quality of life, the 2008 elections will surely be our last chance to reverse the special-interest assault on the Scottsdale we love.

The problem is simple.  The current administration claims that Scottsdale city government is neighborhood-friendly, plans carefully and values to citizen input.  However, actions speak louder than words and the actions of the Council majority over the last year show clearly that Scottsdale city government actually holds none of these values.

If Scottsdale city government were really neighborhood-friendly would we be considering destroying established neighborhoods to widen Chaparral, Thunderbird and Pima Roads?  If Scottsdale city government really planned carefully would we be approving all of the spot up-zonings such as Earll Drive condos?  And if Scottsdale city government really valued citizen input would we have ignored unanimous neighborhood opposition to reverse our earlier denial of SonRise’s school conditional use permit?

The bottom line here is that Scottsdale's unique character and quality of life are under assault by special interests who seek to "redevelop" Scottsdale into a denser, more urban place in order to make more money.  It’s as simple as that, and the only way we are going to reverse this trend is to elect a Council majority that really is neighborhood-friendly, values to citizen input and is willing to manage the growth that is bound to occur so that it happens without overtaxing our infrastructure, straining city services and eroding Scottsdale’s quality of life.

To accomplish this goal we need to make sure that the 2008 elections do not degenerate into a "beauty contest" where candidates talk about their resumes and mouth vague platitudes about "protecting neighborhoods" and "loving Scottsdale" without stating specifically what those words mean.  We need to demand specific commitments from each candidate about their positions on vital issues light rail, subsidized housing, and higher and denser residential development in the southern part of our city.

In a recent editorial one of the local newspapers actually got it right when they said that the future of Scottsdale will be decided by those voters who make the effort to actually show up and vote.  The 2008 city elections will be a referendum on which vision of Scottsdale – that of the citizens or that of the special interests -- will shape the future of Scottsdale.

If you want your city to stay a special place in which to live you need to get actively involved in these elections.  You need to help the good candidates gather signatures, give them some money (the special interest candidates will have plenty of that!) and work to get them elected.  Otherwise, one day you will wake up to find that you are living in a Scottsdale that you did not ask for, do not want, and will not even recognize.

~ Unprecedented Number of Shouts and Spouts

It was very surprising the number of Shouts and Spouts that were received this week. We think it tells the story of an out of control council majority at it's worst and it is becoming much more evident that City Manager Jan Dolan needs to leave town as well as the council members up for re-election need to be put out to pasture at the next election.

They rightfully show an unprecedented support for Marg Nelssen, a young lady brave enough and with the brass cajońes to stand up for what she and her husband have worked hard for over the last 20 years.  We think she was right on target and those things needed to be said one way or the other. We think it was well said by one of those who penned a Shout and Spout when they said:

"If the council members affected took it personally, they have no business being on the council. It’s real easy folks, if you can’t stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen, especially when you don't know how to cook anything but the books."

The Shouts and Spouts also address the Mary Manross favorites, the Pink Taco, Lingerie Bowl, Fetish Prom, etc. Hip, urban, and chic, patent leather boots, and skin tight vinyl suits, welcome to Manross's new Scottsdale.

Thank You Mayor Manross, Jan Dolan,............and Wayne Ecton. This is what your big time urbanization plan has brought us.  Boy what's next?

Well, just check out the websites below to find out what the Dolan/Manross team have done and brought to our beloved Scottsdale:

~ Precedent Now Set, Neighborhoods Will Suffer

The city council, scared to death of a legal fight and a couple million dollars it might cost, capitulated to the bullying of the attorneys representing SonRise Church and the school and office complex they want to build.

Why would the majority of the council do such a thing, especially when City Manager Jan Dolan has put the city of a position of losing up to $16 on the Hualapai Water Plant? The city could have easily prevailed in this case using s competent outside law firm (the city legal department, in our opinion, is incapable of such a win), but could it be that the council majority, if the truth be known, really wanted to allow this due most possibly to their religious persuasion? We think that is the case.

By allowing this action to pass, the council majority has opened all neighborhoods to a situation to which there is no return and no solution. Anyone can now do an assemblage of adjoining residential properties in an area zoned strictly for residential use by using "Straw" purchasers to buy the homes, one at a time, then transfer ownership to a church of the new owners choice including a school, business offices, gyms, etc. and they will now have no recourse.

The council, if they really cared about the residents of the city, would redefine and tighten the residential descriptions, ordinances, zoning, and other laws to disallow any use but strictly residential while allowing a church without the amenities now allowed of record by a serious error on the part of an inept, indecisive, tunnel visioned council majority.

Voters need to look very closely at the upcoming election and see what candidates agreed with this decision and which ones didn't. The ones who disagreed with the decision are the one's who should be elected, all others should be throw on the trash pile of failure.

~Take Down the Decorations…the Party’s OVER!

It is difficult to imagine that the City of Scottsdale’s Mayor and Council members don’t recognize the depth of their own consistent failures, most recently set forth in the outcome of the SonRise school matter.

Focusing on that issue for just a moment, we have to sit up and take note of the utter incompetency that encompassed the recent decision rendered by our elected leaders. Further, we must be somewhat judgmental of the lack of backbone displayed by the majority of our leaders during the voting process. Since when does saving the taxpayers money all of a sudden come into play which is why, they suggest, they made that fateful SonRise decision? Dolan made a 16 million dollar error against the taxpayers with the Hualapai Water Plant but it wasn’t enough to get her fired as it should have been. It is quite obvious that our City’s leaders have overstayed their welcome in our governmental system. Perhaps if we begin taking down the party decorations, they will leave.

Poorly executed decisions, like the one made by a 5:2 vote on the SonRise matter are commonplace in Scottsdale. Although we’d like to, we can not solely blame the Mayor and Council members who voted to allow the school to be built on church premises, bringing with it additional traffic woes, congestion, and disruption to the quiet surrounding neighborhood. The primary culprit in this decision making process was Jan Dolan, the over–her-head, incompetent ringleader in Scottsdale’s city government.

Ms. Dolan is solely motivated by power. She has, on more than one occasion, stated that she is the CEO of Scottsdale, putting her self ahead, in terms of importance, of our Mayor and Council, the elected officials. She certainly has a much heftier salary and benefits package than the Mayor and Council as well as the ability to "run" both the Management and Treasurer positions.

For years, it’s been brutally transparent to those of us who watch the Dolan Dog and Pony shows at Council meetings, that Jan is the frontrunner on ALL decisions made by the City. Mayor and Council are fed what little slanted information Dolan wants them to possess, and sadly, they follow along with the process. Those who disrupt the process are ousted by Dolan. Recently, however, Dolan has been taking heat for her actions in the Barrett-Jackson fiasco, as well as the Hualapai Water Treatment facility.

In an attempt to "take back" her city and posture for the upcoming election, our esteemed Mayor has removed Jan from the negotiations with Barrett Jackson. But what our elected officials don’t realize is that their dumbfounded attitudes and lacksidasical approach to running this City have landed us in a "world of Dolan," one that can not easily be rectified or restored, to its original configuration. Was it poor judgment on the part of our Mayor and Council to allow Dolan to achieve such a powerful position? Was it fear of retaliation?

Many of us are stupefied each time we witness the antics and scripted Council meetings, knowing that regardless of what really matters to the citizens, the agenda belongs to Jan and Mary. There are more bad decisions regarding development in Scottsdale than good decisions looming large at this point in time. Dolan is like a fast moving tornado, taking with her all that’s in her path, capitalizing on good for the purposes of evil, and salvaging her last little bit of energy before her storm dies out. Too bad she can’t understand that the party is truly over for her. Or is it?

Our Council members, who have the ability to stand up to her, are too fearful to do so, leaving the helpless citizens with no recourse but to allow Dolan to ruin Scottsdale, as she purposefully did, Menlo Park, CA. Even those officials who near re-election are hesitant to draw first blood. Evil appears to be winning.

And what of the SonRise decision? The City was engaged in litigation concerning a legislative question and failed to consider other influential factors before rendering their decision to allow the church to build a school in a quiet neighborhood. Again, a bad developmental decision spurned by the personal special interests and lack of knowledge on the part of the council majority as well as and iron-clad, precedent setting plans as laid out by Dolan.

The disastrous precedent set was simple: a church can now do anything it wants in a strictly residential area, no matter how badly it disturbs the tranquility of a neighborhood. They can have 4 to 6 "straw" buyers buy 4 to 6, or any number of adjoining homes which back up to one another on 2 streets, have the "straw" buyers turn title over to the church (assemblage) and put anything they want on those assembled properties with the unsuspecting neighbors now unable to do anything about it thanks to the stupidity, ineptness, and inconsistency of this council majority.

Again, another spineless moronic move by the Council majority who lacked requisite information prior to voting on this matter thanks to the secrecy of Dolan and the legal twisting and manipulating of Robberson.

Again, the fate of Scottsdale as we once knew it hangs in the balance…and we live to see another day….. or do we?

~ City Officials Screw Over Honest Businessman

Local business man and developer Richard Funke was the only property owner whose property was taken by Eminent Domain by the city who didn't "lawyer up" because he believed the city would live up to the verbal agreements and promises they made to him when they told him of their intentions. He now says that was a stupid and naive position and it has cost him dearly.

Since that time, the city has reneged, lied to, or redesigned everything they promised Funke would happen. They gave land to a former city councilman gratis, as well as others, yet the plans they said they liked and suggested Funke have drawn up (at his personal cost) which would have given the city over 190 parking spaces gratis were held quietly in abeyance or "still in review" and without comment until they sprang the ill-conceived and spendy place to install the booster pumps near Horseshoe Falls for the new condos downtown.

We have the following questions:

  • Why was Funke denied the things promised when the city action was initiated?

  • Why did a former councilman receive a piece of Funke's confiscated property apparently gratis?

  • Why did the city lead Funke on for three years or more telling him they were still working on a design when in fact they already had designed what they wanted cutting him totally out of the process?

  • Why isn't the city following the plans and the argument they used to gain possession of the property through Eminent Domain in the first place?

  • Why  are the files so secret that no one seems to know where the original proposal is?

  • Why was the presentation to city council vague and without any pertinent information insinuating that Funke was "very hard to work with"?

  • Could it be that the city will be found to be in gross error and fully responsible for "making Funke whole" as they say when they find a person has been defrauded through deceit and secret dealings?

  • Why has Frank Gray lied, on the record, about Funke's intentions and position concerning retail in the location where the city has stupidly decided to put the pumps?

  • Why did the city say the plans were still being finalized, yet 2 days later announced that they would be tearing up Indian School Road to install the water lines as previously planned?

  • Why isn't the city using the 2 other city-owned properties which are far better suited and would be cheaper to use?

  • Why didn't the condo developers and builders provide space for the booster plant when they built the condos?

  • Why did they call Funke "difficult" when in fact he was only looking out for his and the city's best interest?

We again point the "Fickle Finger of Stupidity, Greed, and total incompetence" at no one else but City Manager Jan Dolan whose ego has far out run her intelligence and expertise as far as we can see. She uses her legal puppet City Attorney Deborah Robberson to write legal opinions to suit the occasion as well as having her suggest, in a round about way, that maybe Funke needs to take his situation to court.

How would you like to be in Richard Funke's position? Why should any taxpaying citizen be put in that position?

We have seen Funke's proposals and they are very fair, to the point that the city still comes out winners on more than one count and they fill the needs and goals of the original reason for the cases of Eminent Domain in the first place.

How long are we going to put up with the way this city does business?

~ Homes on Pima Could Go…..Again!!

Engineers should never be allowed to do marketing or public relations work. They screw it up every time.

Last Thursday at Scottsdale Community College's Turquoise Room we were directed to the Open House for the widening of Pima Road. Darned if it wasn't like stepping into a "time-machine" and going back to 1986 and the presentations at the open houses for the building of the 101 alignment.

They could have dragged the same charts, designs and people to do the presentation out of some storage locker that the ADOT keeps in Downtown Phoenix.

Engineers do not think like regular people. They are so proud of the drawings, charts and graphics they come up with, it is like show and tell.

Folks, when you talk about anything having to do with Pima Road, you had better know the history of the road and both communities that sit on either side of it. It has not always been a comfortable co-existence. Residents of both communities have reasons to be suspicious of each other and of their own government representatives.

Please be aware that any attempt to make light of the very real deep and passionate concerns that residents put to you, will make your jobs 10 times harder. We have all lived through years and years of the chaos of city, tribal, county and state government trying to deal with Pima Road.

The seeds for the widening of Pima Road were sewn in a 1993, by Maricopa Association of Governments (with Manross in full agreement) and the Arizona Department of Transportation and a citizens transportation committee while finalizing the 101 Alignment. It would help if the City of Scottsdale were to publish the reasoning behind the "suggestions." It was not made public at the time, or got lost in the roar around the 101 Alignment.

Overriding all concerns of attendees at the SCC Open House was whether homes were going to be taken. Presenter/consultants said they could not guarantee that no homes would be taken.

Apparently, they told the City leadership that no houses would be taken. That was not the message received Thursday night.

Once again people who have lived for decades in Scottsdale, helped it grow and become a world class city, watched their kids grow up here, and invested their time and money here must live with the fear that their homes will be taken to provide for a roadway.

Of no less importance is the fact that the homes south of Indian Bend Road provide quality affordable housing for Scottsdale, that is work force housing and we do not need to loose any of it.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Scottsdale Government;

If you want a blistering, no holds barred, all out fight you won’t soon forget, try and take even one home from a Scottsdale resident to expand Pima Road.

~ City Blackmailed by Church

What I watched last night made me sick.  You let a group blackmail the city with no fight.  Howard Meyers, Bob Vairo, and John Washington had more smarts than the city lawyers and staff put together.  I want to thank Bob Littlefield and Tony Nelssen for their stand.

Right on!!

For those running again, Please don't give us the "I stand up for neighborhoods and I love Scottsdale" bologna. If this was a Sunday school fine, but this is a business no matter what they say. Even if you would have had to go to the Supreme Court this would have settled this issue one way or the other for the whole country.

To let this group of Christians say the other citizens are against churches was wrong and as my grandmother would say those Christians "Will go to Hell in a hand basket," for lying.  It's just like the tall buildings and density issue with the domino effect happening and down we go.

~ Council Majority are Cowards

Mayor Manross, Councilors McCullagh, Ecton, Lane and Drake,

Your unprincipled decision last night at the City Council meeting has removed what vestige of respect and trust I had in you and the democratic system. Only Councilors Nelssen and Littlefield had the courage to vote on principle, uphold the trust of those that elected them, and not cave in to special interests and threats.

Over the past several years I have attended all the public Planning Committee and Council meetings concerning this application and was heartened by your decisions based on well founded legislation, rational argument and principle.  Now, faced with the need to stand by your rulings and principle you have capitulated.

Last night I was disgusted to see you take the easy way out after the lengthy and obviously biased explanations of your staff. It was as if they were the professional representatives of the applicants.  In contrast to the total lack of discussion with members of the local community it is clear that the staff has worked closely with and supported the applicant. They have opposed the Council and the Planning Committee on the this application from the start.  And now they have prevailed.

It is patently obvious who now runs our City.

Scottsdale is now controlled by the unelected and incompetent City Staff that is overly influenced by commercial and special interests. Not the citizen elected and trusted Council.   Despite doling out huge sums of taxpayer money to relocating car dealers and other commercial interests you balked at the possibility of spending less to protect our neighborhood.  What will you do when the next attempt to circumvent your civic authority with threats and law suits occurs?

I am afraid I know the answer.  I hope that you can live with your conscience!

~ One of Scottsdale’s Darkest Days

My thanks too to all those who spoke and attended the meeting. Also, our thanks to Councilmen Littlefield and Nelssen for their honesty, their understanding of the true factors behind this case and their resolve not to be "bullied" into doing the wrong thing by ADF/SonRise.

I believe that Monday’s decision to reverse the opinion of the Planning Commission in September 2004 and June 2005, and indeed the opinion of the same City Council in July 2005 makes this a "dark day" for all Scottsdale residents and not just the 100’s of residents directly impacted by this project. To see our lily-livered City Council (with the exception of Tony and Bob) capitulate to blackmail was a sad and pathetic sight. To see that neither the City Council nor the staff demonstrated a full knowledge of the case was pitiful to witness. The City Council knew that this was to be a test of their character and fortitude – two passed with flying colors, the remaining five failed miserably.

This case could have been won – make no mistake about that. The cost of defending the rights of Scottsdale citizens whether it was $350k or $2m (spread over what - 5 years?) would have been worth every cent. After all this Council has been doubling the debt load of this City over the last few years (most of it without citizen approval), they are growing expenditures faster than revenues (and ignore all advice to put this in check), they are awarding staff up to 11% pay increases and this is what we get - staff and a Council who are not up to their job and who do not implement City policy.

Manross failed totally to control the City Council meeting on Monday, allowing the applicants (most non Scottsdale residents) to talk incessantly about religion and education when that was not the issue, the issue was land use and compliance with City ordinances, policies and strategies. The reality is that, just as they recognized it in July 2005, this application did not comply with all City ordinances.

First and foremost it does not comply with Sec 1.401, the CUP ordinance. It does not comply with the standards for the Desert Foothills Overlay and on and on it goes. Fundamentally, traffic is still the primary reason why this project is unsafe. The latest traffic report confirms it. It is significant that the Planning Commission, as the land use experts, requested to hear the case first but their request was denied by the "City"

For Manross to claim that the "easy" decision would have been to uphold their prior denial is an insult to our intelligence. The "easy" decision was to cave in to blackmail and that is the path she chose. For Manross to claim this was a compromise is so unrealistic. Since when can a compromise result in greater square footage, increased density and increased intensity of use. The City has no negotiation skills (just look at this and the Barrett Jackson debacle). As Councilman Nelssen pointed out, why weren’t the neighbors involved in the compromise discussions, they are the immediately affected party here. Let me say also that the applicant does not have the right to build all these buildings anyway, that is not if the DRB follow Sec 1.904 of the City Code – or will they be told not to.

So my point of view is that when the Council abandons the citizens it represents, it is time for the citizens to abandon those members of the Council.

Regards,

Graham Kettle

~Rebuttal to the Haskell Letter

Today I write as a the Co-Chair of the Scottsdale Coalition, an activist organization concerned about long range planning and land use, made up of residents of south Scottsdale neighborhoods, most of whom have lived here for over 20 years, raised their families here, shopped in the local stores, voted in elections, served our children's schools and many, have volunteered on boards and commissions and special committees serving the City of Scottsdale.

It was with interest that I read the column by Human Services Commissioner Diane Fausel, someone I know who has served our City well over the years. The Scottsdale Coalition couldn't agree with her more. Our Scottsdale employees deserve the raise that Council voted to give them and, as we have said, they probably deserve hazard pay as well.

Though commissioners and board members are not paid they must sometimes face the hard questions and tough decisions and provide the research that, eventually, Council must vote on. These are positions critically important to any community. For our Scottsdale, the importance is intensified because of rapid growth, changing demographics and lack of developable land to address those who want to come here and enjoy the quality of life we have grown to expect over the years.
> Ms Fausel's comments regarding who on Council has contacted her over years of service is one of the utmost importance.

Communication within, around and between all levels of city government is just as important as the City communicating with residents. It isn't always easy, but to avoid misunderstanding and be able to address issues effectively it must be done.

That brings us to a letter to the editor in the same paper by Lisa Haskell, critiquing activists regarding SkySong. The Scottsdale Coalition is a partner in the SkySong Education Initiative along with ASU and the Scottsdale Unified School District. It was the Scottsdale Coalition that brought the other two partners together to create programs that are even now being carried out in the K-12 schools in the Coronado Complex of south Scottsdale.

Scottsdale Coalition Steering Committee members Sharon Oberritter, Jim Heather, Rita Saunders-Hawranek, Barbara Cawthorne, Annie Hickie, Paul Reich, Dr. Jose Burruel, William Scherer and I are proud to be part of the SkySong Education Initiative that is bringing ASU and the businesses at SkySong to the neighborhood schools to benefit our children and the community.

~ More City Lies, Lies, and More Lies

This week the city brought out the "new plans" for the widening of Pima Road to a 4 lane reliever for the Loop 101.

I call it that as it is, the same plan that was brought forward many years ago that both the residents and the Indian community rejected last time.

What I find comical in this is that the city will not relent on the issues of Light Rail and Chaparral Road or even the issue of removing the designation of Scottsdale Road as a high capacity transit corridor, because of the "master transportation plan", but will move forward on things like the widening of Pima Road and the supposed "streetscape" of Scottsdale Road.

I stood before the council when they approved the funding for this project and asked them point blank if the issue would create changes in traffic issues along the corridor.

That night we were told it would not hinder the "master transportation plan" and the council approved the funding on that assurance.

I specifically remember hearing from Mr. Meinheart that the streetscaping pertained to sidewalks, curb cuts and landscaping, nothing at all about median changes.

Now we come to find out that yet again another lie has been perpetrated on the council and the residents and merchants of the city, by the staff, as there is a merchants petition asking to be involved in this plan as left turn lanes will be shorter or longer and access will be blocked or restricted to some merchants and other entrance/exit issues now exist.

What the hell happened to the great "public outreach" that 4 council members always try to shove under the rug as superior to surrounding cities?

Anyone smell the silent stench of future light rail planning?

The Pima Road issue is no different from this and even dates back farther than the new streetscape for Scottsdale Road.

Thursday I attended the open house meeting for the Pima Corridor plans to see what the city had up their sleeves and trust me on this one, it is the city who is initiating this move against the southern communities yet again with this plan, and it has nothing to do with the Indian Community development of the area in question.

Since the city transportation staff, all two of them, managed to make sure they steered clear of me the whole time I was there, I asked one of the consultants a few questions, like.

  • What is the reasoning for the expansion of the Pima Corridor?

  • The nice man replied it was to relieve the congestion of the loop 101.

    My next question was.

Do you realize that your plan abuts 8 miles of residential neighborhoods that already endure the noise from the 101?

  • The nice man explained to me how "sound mitigation" worked.

  • I asked the nice man, if adding more and more lanes would not produce an un-realistic stress on neighborhoods in regards to noise and cut through traffic?

  • The nice man replied that we already covered the sound issue and that there are policies in place to contend with cut through traffic in neighborhoods.

  • Then I told the nice man that I was a resident of that corridor for nearly 30 years and I really could not care if the loop 101 backed up all the way into Phoenix.

I explained to him that the count projections of the before and after charts on hand did not seem true, as opposed to calling them a flat out lies, the counts showed a decrease in the totals if they changed it to four lanes.

I told the nice man that sound mitigation sucked for the 101 as I can still hear the traffic and the pocket rockets (motorcycles) as well as the engine breaking from tractor trailers when I sit on my patio and that adding more traffic closer to my house for the purpose of relieving piss poor planning on the part of the State is not an acceptable solution to their problem for us who live there.

The nice man was not so interested in talking to me anymore, but never fear as I found another "consultant" to chat with, problem was , he had no answers either.

Excuse me, but I thought this was an "open house" where questions would be answered.

Instead, what we ended up seeing is the city, who is getting paid by ADOT to conduct this "study", show us not only what their intent was but to promote it in such a manner that it presented a done deal and residents better get used to it.

Let’s face it, the city is instigating this as it is clear the residents are not and even the Indian Community has been quoted as saying they want no more encroachment onto their land.

One factor in the decisions of the Indian Community was to develop the land along Pima to their benefit in the way of revenues, but to the large degree it is taking place to create a buffer between the city and the reservation.

Like the Indian Community, the residents of the Pima corridor want no further encroachment and also could not care if traffic backs up the loop 101 all the way back into Phoenix.

The papers and the city however are hyping up the construction on the reservation land as being the need to expand Pima and don’t want to admit the city needs to get this done so more people can flow into the airpark area and new North Scottsdale developments.

When you look at the cards the South has been dealt over the years and if you have lived in the South for any length of time, you know what is coming and the fight we will all have to deal with and our odds of success.

This issue will be updated next week after we attend another scheduled meeting next week to see if anything is different.

    ~Land Lease Spawns New Development

The recent 99 year lease of land in North Scottsdale off the Loop 101 and Bell Road has big development written all over it. In the Republic article, it stated that the buyer was unopposed in the 125-acre sale of the lease on the land. One of the on line comments that I read stated that Scottsdale sells off land and puts up parking lots. So true! We are no longer a resort desert community. We are turning into a cement monstrosity of towers and development higher and higher, denser and denser, bigger, faster, more congested, more insane.

How do developers know what people want when they visit Scottsdale? If you ask the tourism council, they will tell you that Scottsdale’s old western charm still lures people to our city. They continue that visitors want to sample the flavor of the West while also indulging in our nightlife and activities, primarily golf. They are not looking for Opus $1M condos, towers that block their view of Camelback Mountain, congested Canal-front ("waterfront" seems like such a stretch) stores and walkways or mass transit options that ruin the simplistic appeal of our downtown area. They want something different than what they left behind at home, in their big cities of cement and steel.

How could our City’s leaders be so stupid? They are not establishing our city as a frontrunner in tourism. They are ruining it for present and future generations of residents as well as driving people to more home style, lovely environments for vacations.

We might as well kiss our tourism dollars goodbye – build it and they will come? I doubt it. And if they do come, it will be for a quick looksie then they will run, as fast and they can, to someone else’s more pleasing backyard.

~ Dolan/Manross Secrecy Again at Work

During the discussion at Tuesday's Council meeting, the Mayor once again proves she is the Queen of Denial. Wake up Mayor - The public outreach process does not work.

The business owners on Scottsdale Road submitted a petition requesting Stakeholder meetings to give them an opportunity to voice their concerns about the Streetscape project.  Over a year ago, the City held the famous "open house", where the City displays beautiful pictures of trees and takes input regarding colors and textures.  Sort of like Home and Garden TV decorating projects.

But what the City fails to show you are the details of the designs - for example narrowing driveways, closing driveways, blocking signs with trees, and moving signs back away from the road. The Mayor just couldn't understand how more than 6 meetings (over a year ago) wasn't sufficient for these trouble makers.

Thank goodness there is an election coming up. That is probably the only reason that the Council agreed to more meetings.  But these meetings are going to tell the real story - the business owners will insist upon it!

~ Chaparral Road, and a Malignancy Grows

Mayor Manross and City Council members,

Many Scottsdale residents watch the meetings of the City Council just to see the machinations of the Council members.  The latest issue of consequence is the matter of the widening of Chaparral Road.  It would seem the city is being held hostage by 55 or so homeowners and our city's leadership's inability to solve a mediocre problem.

This situation has been known for years, ever since the 101 freeway was put in.  The only thing the city has seen as a solution was to install a small speed reduction circle, at a waste of taxpayers dollars, which did nothing.

Another solution discussed was to channel the traffic to Camelback Road.  Great! Lets screw up another neighborhood with more lack of thought!

The real solution is, of course, simple and should have been done years ago when it would have cost the taxpayers much less.  Buy the properties at fair market value and give the property owners some type of relocation expenses.  Then move on to other problems.

But Noooo!  Our leadership wants to make it much more complicated, difficult and time consuming for everyone: And more expensive for the taxpayers.

In a few weeks, you will be taking up the issue of the Veterans/Cesar Chavez holiday.  Council members will trip over each other to get a few minutes of T.V. time in praising the Hispanic's and the motion will pass 7-0.  And you will probably throw in Veterans Day as a side issue.  Applause, applause.  Politicians will do anything to prostitute themselves for the Hispanic vote!

Why can't council members stand up, show some guts and get the job done?  It seems that, in way to many instances, our city's leadership seems to check their collective brains and common sense at the door before all council meetings!!!

    Respectfully,

    ~Alec DePino Responds

The Activist Editor was kind enough to forward some letters (see below) that were critical of my letter to the Scottsdale Activist concerning local churches and the way they use their land and infringe upon the rights and solitude of city residential neighborhoods as well as current city, county, and state codes and ordinances.

I am very sad that those people don’t understand that my attack was against the commercialization of the religious communities, but not the religion itself. We see it daily and weekly on television through the religious channels and the downfalls of most of the leaders of those TV and other commercialized churches where millions of dollars were accepted from God loving people who blindly trusted these people to do the right thing with the money. Jim Bakkers 700 Club and one of the Baptist organizations is a prime example of the thievery and treachery involved in the commercialization of religion. To some extent, that is happening today within the local church community as well.

I don’t have a problem with, and in fact fully support all of the programs including the education of our children which some of our local churches are providing to their parishioners and those in need, but do they have to be conducted in designated and specifically zoned residential areas where the majority of residents don’t want, belong to, or attend that specific church, temple, synagogue, mosque, or some other House of Worship?

That, my friends, is the real question here. There are many buildings available for purchase or lease that would be just as tax free, much less expensive, more centrally located, much more user friendly, and would hold far more students, homeless souls, etc. than any residential neighborhoods. The Salvation Army, St. Mary’s Food Bank and, the St. Vincent de Paul organization are prime examples of excellent religious organizations getting the best "bang" for their parishioners buck by locating in areas other than residentially zoned neighborhoods, as are religious schools such as Xavier, St. Mary’s, Brophy, and many many more religious, parochial, Charter, or other types of private schools which are located on properly zoned properties.

With all due respect to those who were upset by my letter, I stick with the premise that these types of operations need to be conducted in areas of the city zoned to handle them legally without a religious institution bullying a city council by threatening a ridiculous law suit. Is that "the Christian" way to do things to get what you want? Isn't greed and legal intimidation a sin?

Residentially zoned areas have not, are not, and should not be those areas. Those on the City Council who voted for this to be allowed in North Scottsdale should be ashamed of themselves for allowing the camel’s nose to get under the tent.

Due to the Council’s incompetent decision, every residential neighborhood in the city is now subject to the invasion of the unnecessary and unwanted infringement upon the neighborhood peace and tranquility supposedly afforded to those purchasing single family homes in areas specifically designated as residential. What will they approve next?

Because of the City Councils failed interpretation of the law, or more correctly being bullied into approving the school, what’s to stop a "church" from buying a number of adjacent homes in a prime area through "straw" purchasers, then moving a church school onto the properties using the just approved SonRise school case as the legal example?

If it was a Sect of some kind, what would happen to the property values? How would you like that kind of "church" in your residential neighborhood?

    End of discussion.

    Respectfully,

    Alec DePino

Editors Note: The writer, Tami Harris, below did not say she was a Scottsdale resident but we will print the letter anyway. As with the two letters below and the response above, we feel everyone has the right to express their approval or disapproval of letters or articles printed in the Activist as long as they are respectful.

I  am totally appalled by the letter that was written by Alec DePino. How soon he forgot what Catholicism is all about. To say that he can't find God in Scottsdale is ludicrest. He needs to get his head out of the caliche and see ALL the good the Scottsdale churches have accomplished. Religion is NOT about one hour on a Sunday. The youth, our future, needs Christian education which happens in the evenings and on weekends. Support groups for cancer victims, grief counseling, funerals, marriages and other community events also happen outside your one hour window on Sundays. Unfortunately in order to support Habitat for humanity, feed the homeless, house the orphans and many other feats it does take money. Thank goodness that you are in the minority. You can see that support on any Sunday, at any Scottsdale church. I can think of a lot of other things I would rather NOT see going on in residential neighborhoods. You need to sit down and reevaluate you priorities.
    Mrs. Tami Harris

    Mr. Depino,

I feel so sorry for you.  You will be in my prayers because Jesus has promised that He will forgive all sins, even hatred.

    ~Thought for the Week

"If a well-regulated militia be the most natural defense of a free country, it ought certainly to be under the regulation and at the disposal of that body which is constituted the guardian of the national security. If standing armies are dangerous to liberty, an efficacious power over the militia in the same body ought, as far as possible, to take away the inducement and the pretext to such unfriendly institutions. If the federal government can command the aid of the militia in those emergencies which call for the military arm in support of the civil magistrate, it can the better dispense with the employment of a different kind of force. If it cannot avail itself of the former, it will be obliged to recur to the latter. To render an army unnecessary will be a more certain method of preventing its existence than a thousand prohibitions upon paper."

~ Items from the Land of Oz by Michael Merrill

~Living in the Land of Oz

Could the rumors be true, yet again, that the Wizard of Oz (Jan Dolan) is considering taking that Balloon ride back to Kansas to follow the Yellow Brick Road?

Will the wicked Witch (Mayor Mother Mary) actually get dowsed with water and wither away in a bucket of the same sludge she and the Wizard have bestowed upon this once great city?

Will the Wizards trusted flying monkeys take flight with her back to Kansas and will Scottsdale be free to try to rebuild this city to the standards that have kept people coming here for years?

Well, probably not until we vote Mother Mary out of office in the next election, when the Wizard will see the hand writing on the wall that the Ozites have finally gained that fourth vote we need to run her butt out of the city on a light rail to Sky Harbor, from Tempe of course.

Has anyone noticed that the Wizard of Oz has not been appearing at many city meetings other than the council meetings?

Has anyone noticed that the Wizard of Oz is keeping an "extremely" low profile in almost all issues before the city other than her new massive budget?

She also seems to be ignoring e-mails looking for a response from her, and noticeably there are also certain staff members who also are no longer returning e-mails that are asking questions.

Yep, there is a rumor going around that the Wizard is looking to make a change in locations and on an adventure to see who will let her come and screw up their city like she has done to Scottsdale and Menlo Park CA. Problem for the Wizard, is that she must make her move before she gets the boot from the new council that will be elected as if she waits for the boot, she loses any chance to take that balloon ride with a load of endorsed lies of what a great and all knowing Wizard she really is, NOT.

Maybe she is like me along the lines of blogging as if anyone who reads the blogs or writes in them, it is becoming well noted that more and more Ozites are writing blogs about her needing to be removed and some of them have even made it into the mainstream media for a change.

~Jim Lane sadly proves he is no friend of communities!

I have to write this Oz note with a heavy heart as many people have now realized that they wasted a vote nearly 4 years ago for what many of us thought was going to be a good thing for residents of Oz.

Councilman Lane who sits on the board of Oz, has yet again let down the residents of this city as he has done before and in my opinion was the last straw, and he needs to be defeated in the next election of Oz.

Jim has a great business sense that is needed in this makeup of supposed leaders of Oz , but Jim has never been able to overcome his sense of business knowledge and his need for understanding communities over business in his decisions.

Not only was his vote of the SonRise issue out of step with community, but I can refer to a conversation that I had with him regarding Sky Swamp and his vote to allow housing on a project that residents had stipulations in to not allow such types of uses. During that conversation I lost all faith in Jim as to be a protector of community over business and his reasoning for allowing that to happen have fallen directly in line with his votes that have followed where community and business has clashed.

Future votes on issues of Density, Height, Infrastructure, Transportation, Developer Greed, and Community will prove to all that Mr. Lane cannot be trusted to hold what is best and right for the residents of this city.

Residents who have lived here for many, many years are already noting the voting style of Mr. Lane and his quest to become Mayor, and is the reason that what ever office he decides to run for, he needs to be replaced as there is precious little time to save Oz from those who get elected to office only to have their brains sucked out by the Wicked Witch, the Wizard of Oz, and their Monkeys.

Long ago I was told the brains were sucked out by aliens but since even the aliens (outer space) will not come here, it only leaves the Wizard and her Monkeys that can do it.

     ~Curious George gets a clue

It appears that a few weeks ago Ron McCullagh, another loathed leader of Oz, attended a meeting of the Scottsdale Community Council and as I was told, paraded around with his same pompous attitude that he is better than and more knowledgeable about residents thoughts and wishes then those he pretends to represent.

However after Mr. McCullagh overheard that the formation of COGS and COPP that includes about 7 other community groups (COGS) such as mine and The Scottsdale Coalition, that there is a group now of over 3000 residents and community leaders. It was noted that after his "revelation" of this fact, his demeanor changed dramatically in his approach to a conversation with those at the meeting.

All I can say for Ron is he is a day late and a dollar short as the next election approaches and everyone is already lining up to help in defeating him.

Yep , we have hit rock bottom Ron, and like the Fetish Prom members would say, "stick a pin in him, he is done!"

     ~Marg for Mayor!

I have to hand it to Tony Nelssen’s wife in her rage against the Wicked Witches machine.

Recently the papers have reported about a phone call that Marg made to the council members who voted for the Sunrise settlement and as usual with activist, this information has been let out to the media by what I can say is only one person, the Wicked Witch of Oz.

You got it! I will bet my last dollar that Mother Mary Manross alerted the media to the call that was left and even provided them a copy of it, and yes Larry Manross, we know it was you who used this message as you have been doing in the past to try to whitewash Tony or anyone else you thought was not worthy of sitting with the witch, however this time you lost as residents floated in Tony and even got Bob back over you and the witches lap dog Osterman.

You see Larry is a sneaky little person, full of lies and malcontent for anyone who opposes his wife and "their" views of how this city should be run, and Larry is well known for instigating problems during his wife’s elections and stooping to underhanded little tactics over the years.

Larry’s miscalculation in this instance is that he was not expecting the residents to champion Marg in this issue and slapped a whopping ding in both his and the Wicked Witches Armor.

Just because she is married to Tony has nothing to do with what she can say or do as a taxpayer and a registered voter of the Land of Oz. But your bigger worry Larry will be how to deal with me when election time rolls around as I am very aware of your past underhanded actions during elections and to tell you the truth, you are not going to be a match for the tactics I will use to make sure the Wicked Witch is not re-elected to her throne and that one you can take to the "Bank of Oz" where you will have a "Zero" account balance…………….

     ~347 pages of immigration gobbledygook

    By Craig J. Cantoni
    May 23, 2007

I’ve done something that few reporters, pundits and members of Congress have done. I’ve read all 347 pages of the Secure Border, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007.

If you want to risk going insane, you can read it yourself at:

    http://author.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/upload/Immigration_Draft_Amendment_5_18_07.pdf

The Act should be renamed the Secure Economic Opportunities for Lawyers, Consultants, and Bureaucrats Act of 2007.

When historians write the history of the United States 100 years from now, they will not blame terrorism, military defeat, economic folly, or the invasion of uneducated and unskilled brown people for the decline and fall of the nation. They will blame red tape. The country will have choked to death from too many subsections, subparagraphs, and parentheses. For example, here’s a paragraph from the Act:

    (i) is inadmissible under sections 212(a)(2), (3),

25 (6)(C)(i) (with respect to information furnished by an

26 applicant under section 601 or 602 of the [--]), or

    27 (6)(E) of the Act…

It takes a special kind of neural wiring to decipher such gobbledygook. Since I lack such wiring, my interpretation of the Act might be incorrect. But below are some observations and questions.

    - There are several paragraphs about installing high-tech surveillance gadgets at the border, but the only specific provision about fencing was a gem regarding the addition of two more rows of fencing south of San Diego. The fences will run from the Pacific Ocean 14 miles inland, with surveillance roads between the rows. Questions: Does this mean that one row of fencing is inadequate to stop illegal crossings? If the surveillance gadgets are effective, why are extra rows of fencing needed? What will keep Mexicans from crossing 15 miles inland or shifting to the Arizona border? Haven’t Israel and the former Eastern Bloc countries already established what it takes in walls, fences, manpower, technology, guard towers, guard dogs, and money to secure a border?

    - Employers are given complicated mandates and systems to verify the immigration status of prospective employees, but similar requirements have not been established for public schools to verify the immigration status of students. Questions: Does this mean that illegal aliens can continue to receive free K-12 education, which averages $9,600 per student per year, or a whopping $460,800 for a family of four kids over 12 years? What about free tutors, breakfasts and lunches?

    - Similar questions can be raised about medical care: Are hospitals required to verify the immigration status of patients? Will Mexico’s national health system be charged for the care of Mexican nationals who are in this country illegally? Will physicians and other medical providers continue to be required under federal law to provide interpreters for patients who don’t speak English? Will physicians continue to be required under federal law to work gratis in emergency rooms as a condition of being affiliated with a hospital?

    - Unlike some of my libertarian friends, I have not been paranoid about the government maintaining and tracking the identification of citizens. However, the numerous reporting and tracking requirements in the Act could easily make me paranoid. It is striking how much of the Act is devoted to the safeguarding of Social Security numbers and, at the same time, to the sharing of Social Security numbers and income tax information between agencies. Of course, if the government didn’t force citizens to participate in the pyramid schemes of Social Security and Medicare, and if the Sixteenth Amendment hadn’t been passed, such safeguards and sharing would be unnecessary.

    - The Act authorizes the establishment of concentration camps, er, detention centers, for 20,000 illegal aliens, including the use of closed military bases. In other words, the centers will be capable of detaining only .002 percent of the estimated illegal alien population in the United States. If the government really got serious about arresting and deporting illegal aliens, how many concentration camps, er, detention centers, would be needed?

    - In a page out of the former Soviet Politburo’s central planning book, the Act establishes a commission to set the wages of guest workers. The commission will ensure that employers are paying prevailing wages, including union wages for jobs that would otherwise be covered by collective bargaining.

    - The Act is silent about the possible unintended consequences of the Act or the loopholes in the Act. Certainly, there have to be plenty of unintended consequences and loopholes in 347 pages.

I have hundreds of other concerns and questions about the Act. No doubt, my congressman has read the Act and can help me.

    Ha-ha-ha!

~Keep your hands off my gardener

    By Craig J. Cantoni
    May 20, 2007

Damn! Immigration reformers in Congress now want to take away the only subsidy I receive from the government.

I’m referring to my gardener Jose, an illegal alien.

Why is my gardener a subsidy? Let me explain.

Jose and his wife Maria, who has a house cleaning business, earn about $40,000 a year and pay about $10,000 in taxes. In return for the $10,000, they receive about $50,000 annually in government services, including $40,000 in bilingual education and special tutors for their four children, plus the costs of national defense, public health, public safety, free medical treatment in hospital emergency rooms, and other federal, state, county and city services.

If Jose and Maria were required to pay the full cost of the government services they receive instead of being subsidized, Jose would have to charge a lot more for his gardening. Because he is subsidized, my gardening is subsidized. This is an example of how subsidies and handouts distort market prices.

Selfishly, I like the arrangement. After all, because of the highly progressive tax code, I pay a hugely disproportionate share of income taxes and thus subsidize the 50 percent of US citizens who pay little or nothing in income taxes, including citizens who sit on their asses all day and contribute nothing to the economy or society. At least I get some of my taxes back with the gardening subsidy, albeit a relatively small amount.

Speaking of citizens who sit on their asses, take Linda Peterson. A third-generation American citizen, she is a single mom with four children and no job. Feigning a disability, she receives SSI in addition to AFDC and a myriad of other welfare payments. In total, she pays zero taxes out of her own pocket and receives $60,000 in government services.

Given a choice, I’d rather deport Peterson and make Jose and Maria citizens. At least Jose and Maria work their asses off and pay some taxes. Ironically, they reflect the Protestant work ethic more than Protestant Peterson.

Nativists claim that Latin American immigrants aren’t assimilating to the American culture. Well, if moochers like Peterson embody the American culture, maybe that’s a good thing.

Sure, on average, immigrants from Latin America have more socioeconomic problems than native-born citizens, including higher crime rates, illegitimacy rates, and dropout rates. But there are plenty of native-born subgroups with even worse rates. Intelligent public policy would encourage the industrious and responsible, and discourage the un-industrious and irresponsible, whether they are immigrants or native-born.

When my grandparents immigrated here in the early twentieth century, tax and social policies did just that. Back then, entitlements, welfare, subsidies, and other forms of transfer payments were about 3 percent of federal spending. Today, they are over 50 percent.

The point is, it is foolish to reform immigration policies without reforming tax and social policies.

Until both are reformed, keep your hands off my gardener.

~The US Senate’s version of the parable of "The Good Samaritan"

A Samaritan senator was walking down the road towards the border.  He saw fifteen million people by the wayside.  They were fleeing from religious and political persecution, mutilation and death.  They pleaded with him to allow them to enter his country so they could be safe.  They promised to work hard and abide by the laws.  But they were not of his religion or color so he told them they would have to get in line and await their turn.  He passed them by and forgot about them.

After he entered his country he encountered eleven million people from a nation that, while not as rich as his own, was one of the wealthiest countries in the region.  They had broken the immigration and identity laws of his country and had sneaked into his country illegally.  They demanded that they be forgiven for breaking the laws and that they be allowed to go the head of the line of the fifteen million people he had passed by earlier.  They practiced his religion, were of his color, promised to vote for him and vowed to work cheaply in the businesses owned by his financial supporters.  He gave them amnesty and citizenship while the fifteen million people continued to die each day by the thousands.

~ Marg Nelssen is my personal hero! She had the guts to stand up and say what should have been said. If the council members affected took it personally, they have no business being on the council. It’s real easy folks, if you can’t stand the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen, especially when you don't know how to cook anything but the books."  Woman to woman: Marg, you have more guts and brains than the 5 council members you sent messages to combined. Great Job!!!

~Activist readers are asking a couple of questions of the Arts and Cultural Council People............

  • Just how many different groups are there in the City of Scottsdale, official and unofficial deciding who and what art projects are displayed????? Seems like there are a slew of people claiming to be the voice for the arts and culture areas of life.

  • Second question, those windows under the bridge that crosses from Nordstrom's to Fashion Square, why they used to advertise Verrado? Could you fill those windows with art done by kids in our schools so it stops looking like a cavern that nobody cares about and shows us something we can all be proud of and smile about?

  • ~After the fiasco at SCC a couple of nights ago concerning the widening of Pima Road, Jan Dolan better be packed and on her way down the road. When a consultant refuses to tell a citizen who he works for and answers "I'm nobody", then I have even bigger problems and ugly suspicions. When we walked into the Turquoise Room, we thought we were walking into the first presentation of the Pima Freeway alignment in 1985. Then, with current City liaison Paul Porrell telling us there is no guarantee that houses will not be taken and he is the only Transportation Staff in the room I’ve got even more problems and serious concerns. Then, to top it off, there was a Transportation Working Group meeting scheduled for the same time frame as the Pima Road Open House. Now, we have major problems with the "innocent" scheduling, but we were still able to make both meetings and give HELL to all involved. Don't let the door hit ya’ in the backside on your way out Dolan, you secretly knew this was coming all along, but I’m sure you are NOT ready for the all out fight we will be giving you if you remain in Scottsdale pushing things we don’t want and that we won’t stand still for .

~ Councilman Lane has joined the side of no return as in "we won’t return you to the council".

~ Gary Boyd thinks Nelssen has asks stupid questions at council meetings? Only someone totally ignorant and uninformed would say such a thing. If we can't question those who make or set policy, then who will? That kind of ignorance and stupidity has gotten us where we are today, in bad shape and getting worse by the day. Go ahead Gary, we double down dare you to run for council!

~ Manross wanted a "Hip Urban Environment" to be "with it" so to speak. She got the "Pink Taco", the "Lingerie Bowl", and the "Arizona Fetish Prom 2007" S&M, freak shows, etc. Madam Mayor, welcome to your self imposed, self generated, nightmare which would have never happened if you had used your head instead of your legacy ambitions to promote yourself and your twisted values! Lady, you need to take your dolly Dolan and move on…. Quickly!!

~ Attorney James Derouin and Nan Nesvig are the only people we can see at this time who can intelligently, honestly, and ethically represent the citizens of Scottsdale besides Nelssen and Littlefield to get this city back on track both financially and ethically.

~ Fellow citizens; we now see who should and who should not be re-elected in 2008 and it’s obvious we need to clean house by voting out Manross, Drake, Lane, and McCullagh. Too bad we have to wait to dump "Mr. Perfect" Ecton. What a bunch of stupid losers who were apparently "bought off" by the staff who should also be fired and probably will by the new administration we elect!!

~Bravo Marg Nelssen! I wish more people would leave nasty in-you-face messages on Council member’s phones after the meetings! Sometimes I think these "chosen few Manross Council members" think they walk on water.

~ I was against those classed as "Activists" who say we need Derouin as mayor and Nesvig as a council person. I would like to apologize to them and hereby agree to dump all that voted for the church school last night. After reading about Derouin in the Scottsdale Tribune and some writings in the Scottsdale Republic, I believe Derouin will be the perfect fit as mayor. The credentials I have seen so far are more than impressive! I saw Nan Nesvig at the Scottsdale Community Council meeting as well as other places, and read her letter in the Scottsdale Activist so we see that she is very involved in the city. They both now have my total support and vote.

~ The only 2 council members who understand the wants and needs of the citizens as well as the economic needs of the city are Littlefield and Nelssen. Gary Boyd and company, go back to sucking your thumbs and whining………..

~ I was totally dumbfounded and unbelievably disappointed by the vote of the city council Monday night. The residents who live in the area were totally against the project yet it was approved by four Keystone Cops and one egotistical primadona. St. Patrick’s church is pulling the same crap by screwing over the local residents. When will these absurdities be stopped? We now know who needs to be voted out of office and those four know who they are too.

~ God Bless you Herb Drinkwater. We wish you could send some kind of a message to the council majority… like a Lightening Bolt with five forks to shock them back to reality!

~ For the record. To;  Mayor Mary Manross
                                       Betty Drake
                                       Jim Lane
                                       Wayne Ecton
                                      Ron McCullagh
What a disgrace last night was. To think you caved to pressure. We all knew what the outcome was going to be.To think you gave in to the bullies (Christians?), because of money.  Money didn't bother you when it came to giving millions to Lund or Dolan blowing millions on Hualapai. We wonder where your priorities are.  Thank goodness at the next election we can all thank you for a job well done. You are a disgrace to the community.

~My very first experience with Scottsdale City government was around 1985 when we were promised a widened Pima Road if we voted for the "Wall." That, of course, turned out to be a lie; and when the issue as raised with then Councilmember Manross at a meeting of the Scottsdale Ranch Community Association sometime around 1990, she got huffy. Then Jane White told me a couple years ago: "Everyone knew that was a lie." I didn't. It’s just a way of life here. I can't believe that the City still cannot figure out what to do with Pima; stupid is as stupid does.

~ Speaking of the elections for '08, you forgot to mention one common denominator in what may be all of the council and mayor candidates that seem to turn bad and represent only big money and like to spend same once they are in office - that common thread is the Scottsdale Leadership program. I've watched this for over 30 years while I lived in Scottsdale, and it seems almost 100% if we get a bad one, mayor or council member, they went through Scottsdale Leadership. Check it for yourself.

~To Councilman Tony Nelssen: I have been impressed with your insight and point of view for some time. I was especially proud of your resoluteness at the meeting last night. We really need a person like you as mayor of our fair city.  You have the right instincts and the values with which I grew up.  I was not very pleased when I heard the reference to your intention to not run again. Now is the time to "charge," not "retreat."

~ Wow! I knew that "McOsterman", Drake, Ecton and Manross would screw over the citizens of the city because of their ineptness and lack of foresight and vision, but Councilman Lane, what are you drinking of late? Being that you will probably run for re-election I would strongly suggest that you not run for Mayor because you’ll get blown out of the water and there are many of us who will see to it, you may not even be able to hold your current seat if you make any more stupid votes like last night. We are totally ashamed and disappointed in your inept and totally wrong decision.

~I am so tired of this city throwing good money after bad. Dolan nearly bankrupted Menlo Park with her developmental shenanigans and "street Furniture" (which they tore down after she left). Apparently Manross made a very poor decision in hiring her and doesn’t have the guts or brains to fire her – so now what? Jan’s our Treasurer and our City Manager. I guess we sit around and watch Scottsdale crumble into ruin then wait for Jan to up and leave for greener (money) pastures.

~ Hey Lane, you just "Screwed the Pooch" as they say at NASA. You let us all down and will pay the ultimate price as an elected figure; a stunning loss in the next election.

~ I see Nan Nesvig is out and about at city functions and meetings. We hope and pray she does run for council again. She has more talent in one finger than most on the council do now.

~ I read in the Activist that Jan Dolan is thinking of quitting. I also heard the same thing from someone in city hall. OMG!! If that would only come true we could have our city back. The sooner the better!

~ Lisa Haskell is the ultimate hypocrite! I read her article in the Tribune – what a waste of space. They should print articles by reputable persons, not wishy-washy paranoid fence-straddlers who have nothing better to do with their time than embarrass themselves with written gibberish. Haskell is a #1 activist of the worst kind, she complains incessantly about everything yet does nothing to resolve the issues. And she’s once again complaining that the Activists have ruined Scottsdale? Yep, it’s called "the idiot lights on the dash are on" and it’s time they were put in their place; some other town. It'll be all fun and games to Haskell until she no longer has a place to live because SHE can’t afford a home in South Scottsdale after hers has disappeared due to the assemblage and development she so openly and fervently supports.

~ Why is the city of Scottsdale and the taxpayers paying for a link to a gay website http://www.scottsdalecvb.com/static/index.cfm?contentID=680 while all other entities must pay their own way?

~Hey I thought that Lisa Haskell had skipped town? Or maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. That woman has major psych case written all over her!

~ Mrs. Nelssen, you did good!! It’s about time others, including me did the same thing by standing in defiance of an out of control, out of touch, and a self back-slapping bunch of good old boy yahoos who don’t know jack about diddily. Oh yeah, Ecton does know how to get compliance, he just shut the water off to the native Africans until they complied with his self instituted mandate, as he told a number of citizens publicly on numerous occasions.

~Goodness - another worthless article by Gary Boyd. I think dementia or senility has taken over. That guy sure doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. He sounds like a babbling boob. First he sends nasty emails to Nelssen threatening to take him out at the next election, then a rather flowery but benign article to the Repugnent which basically said absolutely nothing.

~ Christine Schild and Steven Steinberg are rumored to be thinking of running for city council? According to her statement in the Scottsdale Republic, Schild approved of the very unpopular council action on SonRise School, while Steinberg is the planning commission chair who, in his pomposity, said the citizens have no right questioning the Planning commission decisions. Do we really want these egotists on the council? I think NOT!!!

~ The only thing the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights said about the government and religion was that there shall never be a national religion, there were no other rights provided other than as follows:

    • Amendment I

    • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

~ Is Rick Kidder as dumb and off base as he comes off on most occasions?

~ I couldn’t believe that Lisa Haskell has still another letter in the Trib. Over the years, we have watched her flit from candidate to candidate, council person to council person and from cause to cause leaving a wake of total disbelief and dishevelment behind as she changes opinions as often as we change our socks.

~Thank you to the Activist. We know that you are the driving force behind getting this city off dead center and making change happen for the better. Without you, we’d all be victims of the Manross Dolan stronghold. Looks like they no longer have control of this city.

~We are so excited to hear that Jim Derouin is going to run for Mayor. We had the pleasure of meeting him some time ago and let me tell you, he is so articulate, intelligent, in tune with Scottsdale’s needs and worldly.. He’ll run circles around Manross with both hands tied behind his back! Jim has our vote. Maybe change IS possible for Scottsdale.

~I am really sickened by the crap that Gary Boyd is spewing about Tony Nelssen. Boyd has his head up his *** if he can’t see that Nelssen is trying to make credible changes for the better in our City. Problem is that Nelssen and Littlefield are literally working alone to save this city. Just goes to show you that some people will try even in the face of adversity. Bravo Tony! Keep up the good work – Boyd – go back to your dark hole of double talk and stay there!

~Art Decabooter is a very nice guy but also a pansy – he can’t do anything without a huge support staff! We still don’t have an explanation of the financial woes of Scottsdale Community College. He is NOT mayoral material unless we want another four years of Manross…God help Scottsdale.

~We need a complete annihilation of the City Council re-election candidates! Lane, McCullagh, Drake, and Manross ALL need to GO! It’s no use keeping any of them - they have all become Dolan puppets, lack a mind of their own and can’t make a qualified decision to save their souls. The end will NOT come soon enough for them. Oh yeah, Robberson needs to go with them.

~I say – CLEAN HOUSE! Manross, Lane, Drake, Ecton, McCullagh – they all need to be put out to pasture! We will have some good replacement candidates who can promise us change – our existent bozos have embarrassed our City for too long!

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    March 1, 2007, 12:00 PM MST

Prop 13 Style Property Tax Reform Coming To Arizona

Prop 13 Arizona, a coalition of elected officials and citizen activists, has organized to bring California Prop 13 style reform to Arizona.  Prop 13 Arizona brings together elected state officials, citizen activists, taxpayer, industry and other political interest groups to form the definitive statewide property tax reform coalition in Arizona.

Over the next year, representatives of various stakeholder groups will be working together with elected officials and citizen activists to create comprehensive, transformational property tax reform bills and initiatives to include:

    ·         Eliminating classes of property

    ·         Resetting the property tax rate back to no more than 1%, the maximum allowed in the Arizona Constitution

    ·         Setting a 2% annual limit to valuation increases after a property is purchased

    ·         Rolling back current valuations to 2001

“Prop 13 Arizona: …comprehensive, transformational property tax reform...

    Prop 13 Arizona will:

    ·         Provide comprehensive reform for driving future economic growth and prosperity

    ·         Enable businesses and individuals to plan and budget their tax requirements

    ·         Attract new business to the state

The work has already begun.  New stakeholders join Prop 13 Arizona each week.  Bills and initiatives are being drafted. The first initiative, C-01-2008, a portion of the reform language, has been filed with additional filings to follow.  Stakeholders from around the state are providing their input in order that the bills and initiatives appeal to the widest segment of the population, amenable to business owners, industry and individuals.

Look for more from Prop 13 Arizona in the coming weeks and months.

    ~ Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund

The Scottsdale Activist is very pleased to announce an effort on the behalf of the residents and taxpayers of the city of Scottsdale to promote open, honest and accountable city government. The Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) has been created to take legal action to hold the City accountable when its actions are contrary to state law, the City Charter, City ordinances or the public interest.

The most necessary ingredient to make the SLDF work will be confidential contributions from concerned Scottsdale citizens who are willing to help their community.  By contributing, we can change the way City Hall does business and insure that our tax dollars will be spent wisely.

No funds from the SLDF will or can be used for any political purpose.

Contributions shall be kept confidential as permissible by law and can be made in any Washington Mutual Bank to account number 3114165786 for the Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund. Branch locations are listed below. Contributions are not tax deductible.

The SLDF has retained the law firm of Miller LaSota & Peters, PLC, in connection with the patently illegal action taken by the Mayor and Council appointing the most recent Scottsdale City Attorney, while ignoring the residency requirement of the Scottsdale City Charter even though the new City Attorney’s contract (according to Scottsdale Republic reporter Laurie Roberts) requires that she reside in Scottsdale.  The City Council action was based on a legal opinion which was reportedly rendered during a closed door Executive Session of the City Council by a subordinate to the then acting City Attorney, who was subsequently appointed to the City Attorney position by a vote during a public City Council meeting. The opinion has been requested as a public document under state law, but the City has not yet provided it. The SLDF will take other appropriate legal actions based on the conduct of the Mayor and Council.

Washington Mutual Bank Locations at which contributions to the SLDF can be made are:

    72nd & Shea                    7337 E. Shea Blvd #120                480-609-8524
    Hayden & Chaparral     7908 E. Chaparral # C-113            480-949-0069
