Click a on date to open. ~ Traaen Resignation a Cruel Dolan Joke The forced, yes forced resignation of Human Resources General Manager Teri Traeen is a cruel and very costly joke played upon the taxpayers and citizens of Scottsdale by a totally out of touch Mayor and her council majority who have swallowed Dolan’s "stink" bait, hook, line and sinker. If anyone in their right mind couldn’t see the way the Jan Dolan and the city manipulated Teri Traaen’s resignation, they need to get a grip on reality and pay a lot more attention. Any third grader could see through this shabby and shameful ruse. See the attached resignation letter as well as the resignation contract just below this editorial. Having met and worked with Ms. Traaen, we now feel that Ms. Traaen was "only doing what she was ordered to do" by Jan Dolan, her immediate supervisor. Maybe Ms. Traaen did too good a job with the new City Ethics Code she helped develop which neither Manross, Dolan and some others wanted to come to fruition for obvious reasons. Jan Dolan is up to her eyeballs and wild hairdo’s in deep trouble and she knows it only too well. Sadly, she is using our "astute and insightful (?)" mayor to keep her afloat; but for how long??? Dolan has knowingly stumbled and fumbled Scottsdale taxpayers into a 15 million dollar boondoggle at the Hualapai Water Plant. We’re hearing of dangerous THM’s out of control at the new Hayden Water Plant for which our experts review is still pending because she decided to bury us in a 10 ream paper box full of BS rather than some simple comparison charts which would have been simple if verifiable. Her "management style" has cost the city the loss of hundreds of excellent, loyal employees in less than a year which she blamed totally on Traaen. Those employees remaining are now trying to unionize to protect themselves against the onslaught of Dolan’s seemingly maniacal "leadership" and failure to understand what Scottsdale citizens expect of their leaders and city management. Should the employees be successful, the budget will have to be adjusted considerably upward to compensate for the additional costs to the city caused by unionization. The employees don’t want the union. They want a city government to be their partner who understands their needs and trusts the employees to do the best job possible as they have done for decades, at least until Jan Dolan came on the scene. There was a city "Health Audit" recently which found that the major cause of city employee health problems, which have reportedly escalated over 35% in the last year, were caused by chronic low morale, but of course that portion of the report was kept out of the final report and had absolutely nothing to do with Dolan’s heavy handed management style according to what we’ve been told. If you believe that, I have ocean front property in Denver to sell you. Dolan’s often faulted and failing project by project zoning, height and density rulings are allowing zoning attorneys like John Berry, non-tax paying entities such as ASU & ASUF, as well as for–profit developers such as DMB Inc. to make millions of dollars from deals that should never have happened and should never have gone to the Planning Commission or DRB, let alone the City Council. Dolan has spurned every effort to readdress the 20 year old building, height, density, and zoning overlay as well as stalling any "green" planning so as to allow ultra urban densities and light rail or street cars to creep into our city which has always been based on low density, family neighborhoods, and readily accessible business areas. She is doing all of this without rebuilding the city infrastructure first which will cost many times more in the future to redesign and rebuild. Dolan fought viciously to keep both the Treasurers job as well as the City Managers job. Why? It’s much easier to manage a reported 50 million dollar slush fund when you control both ends of the taxpayer’s money. Dolan came from Menlo Park California which at the time was a city of less than 40, 000 residents and after talking to residents in Menlo Park, that is a whole other sorted story! How could she qualify to manage a socio-economically and geographically diverse city of 200,000+ residents, thousands of multi-million dollar homes, and hundreds of billions of dollars in commercial and business developments? We all wondered at the time, but gave her a chance to show what she could do. She has failed miserably in our estimation. What will it take to stop the unionization of the city employees and get our city back on a firm financial and fiscal course to maintain the low density and friendly, well kept neighborhoods we have always desired along with a balanced budget that doesn’t need a Bond Vote to take care of the business of the city? Simple…….. Fire Jan Dolan or allow her to resign: Either way without her "Golden Umbrella" would be a wonderful thing for the City of Scottsdale and for the taxpayers. Finally, allow substantial public input into the hiring of any replacements for any of the Charter Officer positions. ~ Water Booster Plan for Downtown Condos All Wrong! Have you, Scottsdale citizens, realized that the present site plan for the Booster Pump that will supply the downtown condos should be in industrial zoning and not on prime C-3 retail space at Marshall Way and Indian School Road? Many buildings and lots were condemned for the purpose of creating a smooth flow of pedestrian shoppers from 5th Ave. to Main Street and to provide a calming Oasis for the citizens. Horseshoe Falls was built to attract the public to a quiet, pleasant place to sit and enjoy the city during their walking experience. We all figured that the city would either make a nice park out of the rest of the property, or put some desirable, low density, retail on the remainder of the lot. WRONG!!! The water line that will be needed to service the condos through this booster station runs down Goldwater Blvd. The booster plant is needed for the likes of the Optima and Waterfront high rise buildings and condos. We have no doubt whatsoever that out of 217,800 sq. ft of land that 4,000 feet can be found for the station. In fact if located in the spot just north of the bridge over the canal (out of site and of little value) it would be perfect!!! Since it would not be very visible it could be a clean and simple design and save hundreds of thousands of dollars in "art designs" without tearing up any streets or defacing precious C-3 property. After all, the condos and extremely poor city planning are the ones who have created this need, not the retail neighborhood near Horseshoe Falls, the pedestrians, or the taxpayers. The above plan should be considered as a simple alternative and save an important and needed pedestrian intersection from being dragged down to its lowest possible use. We noticed that the actual footprint needed for the booster station planned for Marshall Way and Indian Schools Road is around 1875 sq. ft. out of over 6000 sq. ft. of open space not use by the Horseshoe Falls. On top of being the lowest and worst possible use of this corner, the city’s plan, on a whim or in revenge but not out of necessity, is using up every inch of remaining open space for a nonsensical, non-tax producing space and tax dollar gobbler. The current(?) plan is totally contrary to the plan staff presented to the City Council last summer. In addition you now have the added cost of tearing up Indian School Road for a full city block (disrupting traffic) plus other incidental, unnecessary costs. Add the cost of making the building housing the pumps an art project without any park grounds or retail provided at all and you have another costly Dolan/Gawf/Manross White Elephant which will not produce one single tax dollar for the city. We’re estimating the taxpayers are picking up the costs with the spending of hundreds of thousand of unnecessary taxpayer dollars in a totally unnecessary expense for a totally skewed and screwed plan that should be abandoned by the City with a new plan mentioned above using the 5 acres at the Waterfront area at a far less cost all the way around. This has Jan Dolan and Ed Gawf's fingerprints all
over it. This site at Marshall Way and Indian School Road could generate
both property tax and sales tax if properly developed. In addition,
there is land closer to the Goldwater water line available which has
been offered and refused by the city. Maybe this may be a case for ARS 12-1134. A ??? ~Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Dolan? It’s a "dog eat dog" world out there with the biggest dog prevailing. That being said, one might ask themselves, why is Dolan the self-proclaimed "Big Dog" in the City of Scottsdale? We didn’t elect her Mayor of this city – We didn’t give her the "end all - be all" authority to make big decisions about this city. We certainly didn’t think that her duties of running this city gave her such big cajoñes that she could trump decisions or otherwise influence important Council mandates for this city. So, why isn’t Manross trying to rein her in by her leash to protect this city? The answer? Manross is scared of the Big Bad Dog. It seems that anyone who dares to cross Dolan’s path is either hit over the head by a two-by-four, fired, or both as was the case with Teri Traaen and others. Still, Council and Manross, ever cognizant of this situation, allow it to prevail. They allow the "Big Dog" to rule the roost, run the yard and blatantly screw up our City. What are they afraid of? Council has the power to fence the dog. They can create a fair and equitable situation whereby the dog can be controlled. History dictates that this dog is out of control and requires some level of discipline. How do they reassume that control? Hire an independent Treasurer to manage city funds. Without the wanton authority to spend freely, Dolan‘s hands will be at least partially tied. Reduce her role as City Manager, allowing her predetermined authority with supervision by Council. In other words, take back the copy of the keys to the city that the Mayor stupidly handed to her in the first place! And if she won’t comply? Reciprocate. Hit her over the head with a two-by-four and show her the door sans any golden umbrellas. Now how’s that for fair and equitable? We certainly think the Big Dog would be sporting her tail between her legs at that point and leave of her own volition.
~ City Council Needs to Act Positively on this Petition The petition below will be discussed on 6 March 2007. Councilman Tony Nelssen is the expert on how and why this agreement ever came about. We remember, if we are correct, when this was purchased and the offer was made that the city was to be given 160 acres. There was no housing in the area at that time. On top of this, the city, we understand, was only given 155 acres. Where did the other 5 acres go? The Petition Request for the City of Scottsdale to provide a Vehicle Parking Space Area at the Western Entrance to Pinnacle Peak Park along with permitted curbside Street Parking. The petition requests that a City Public Parking Lot Area be installed at the Western Entrance to Pinnacle Peak Park along with permitted Public Street Parking along Jomax Road form the Park entrance at 96th Street, along Jomax Road to Pima Road, which is presently denied, because of need for additional vehicle parking. The present "No Public Parking Restriction" along Jomax Road from the Western Entrance of the Park to Pima Road makes this restriction appear to be a "gentleman's agreement" which is unfair to all Citizens of Scottsdale. Because of this present prohibited curbside parking restriction, it appears to be a "private park entrance". It is one (1) mile from Pima Road to the Western Trail Entrance to Pinnacle Peak Park at 96th Street and Jomax Road. It is approximately 4 1/2 miles from the Intersection of Pima Road and Jomax Road to the Eastern Entrance of Pinnacle Peak Park taking the Happy Valley Road route. For those that are closer to the Western Entrance of Pinnacle Peak Park, this is an unnecessary restriction and expense to visit and experience the beauty of this park. In the event that a Public Parking Space Area is not feasible at this time at the Western Entrance to this park, there is "absolutely no reason" for not removing the "No Parking Restriction" that is presently in place along Jomax Road from the Western Park Entrance to Pima Road, to promote easier access to the Western Park Entrance. This is the only fair and immediate thing for this Council to do which would be in the best interest of everyone involved.
~ Mayor’s State of the City Speech ???? The State of the City Speech was as expected; nothing new and with the mayor in full "I’m the best thing since sliced bread" campaign mode. Husband, Larry had to start the half-hearted standing ovation. Reportedly, City Hero and Matriarch Frances Young for whom the Frances Young Community Hero Award was named, strongly disagrees with the mayor and council actions and decisions of late including the actions of Jan Dolan, Deb Robberson, Neil Shearer and Teri Traaen among others. This is a very bad omen for the mayor and her re-election bid being that Frances and her friends have always fully supported the mayor. Frances and the mayor have been close friends for decades but Frances reportedly refused a personal invitation from the mayor for her normal prominent seat at the State of the City Speech this week in the Kiva due to her disagreements with the mayor, some council members, and current city situations. Manross claimed "no" support for light rail through the main downtown area but didn’t rule out modern street cars which is what the paid consultant HDR from Portland Oregon deals with and represents as his main business. Nor did she rule out light rail anywhere else in the city such as to SkySong or to just below the downtown area. She also didn’t rule out ultra urban density, high rise buildings, or the spread of ultra high density and extended heights into the residential neighborhoods. Why didn't she mention something innovative such as a monorail system of some sort which few cities have? She didn’t promise a total review of the 20 year old and obsolete city business and residential overlays and she certainly didn’t offer anything new on the "green" construction front. She also didn’t talk about the Dolan proposed high density, high-rise urban "centers" located throughout the city which we are just now hearing about. She totally gutted Councilwoman Betty Drake’s vision of the exciting "Villages" program fearing a call for Districts as a compliment to the "Villages" plan, and did nothing but praise Councilman Ron McCullagh for presumingly voting with her and against the fiscal conservatives on the council which he claimed total allegiance to during his campaign. She then flip-flopped on the issue of political signs or the "Incumbents Protection Act" as it’s called by many, by now approving it in a failed attempt to regain at least some re-election support and to keep McCullagh’s re-election spark at least a weak glimmer in the distance. Do you suppose she has flip-flopped on the political sign issue because she knows that political signs, even small ones, will bury her in the 2008 election? Interestingly enough, real estate signs are apparently exempted from any of the sign regulations. Why pray tell, would that be? Could there be a little influence peddling going on here??? She tried to lay claim to all of the improvements the city has seen in the last few years but didn’t really talk too much about the success (?) of SkySong, and especially didn’t talk about the very low city employee morale, the freeway Photo Radar profits which go into the general fund for Dolan to squander, the 15 million dollar Dolan boondoggle or the firing, Opps, I mean resignation of Teri Traaen among other ominous issues. She claimed her full support and success for the Waterfront high-rise project when, in fact, according to former mayor Sam Campana in the Scottsdale Republic, Manross vehemently opposed high-rise living and the waterfront projects over and over while a city council woman. It's a bitch when the truth catches up with you isn't it? If the mayor had an ounce of spunk and Scottsdale Class instead of a snobby attitude when asked to participate in the "Lingerie Bowl", she should have lightly thanked them for flattering her with the invitation but explained that she could not compete with the beauty or prowess of the ladies who would be playing and she would therefore graciously decline their invitation to participate. That would have been the end of the story. The story will now grow legs just as the Pink Taco fiasco did because of her curt remarks concerning the "Lingerie Bowl" and Manross will pay for her snobbery and her snotty attitude. I thought former mayor Sam Campana said it all when she stated in the Scottsdale Republic "As I watched many of (Mayor) Herb Drinkwater’s initiatives mature during my administration, Manross is the beneficiary of much of our vision and planning".
~ News Channel 12 Questions Manross To see how Manross danced around questions from News Channel 12 Anchors concerning light rail down Scottsdale Road in the downtown area, click on the link below; Then click on the "Scottsdale Mayor Vows...." portion of the menu on the right side of the picture. You'll note that she never rules out modern street cars which run on rails............... ~ More Spending Money Through Still More Bonds? Isn't it rather obvious that this city has spent and is spending far more that the revenues provide? Isn't it time we stopped all of this nonsense and made the city manager, city treasurer, and the council live within the means available? Many of the issues voted upon in 2000 have never come to fruition? Where did the money go or was the ability to bond used to fortify the city's AAA bond rating when in actuality, they had no intent of ever spending the dollars we appropriated for those items we determined we needed? We're indebted to SkyDiaper alone for over 150 million dollars but Dolan and company have been using the General Fund to get the work done so the bond rating wouldn't be affected. Shouldn't every dollar in the General Fund be designated to be used in specific places and for specific things instead of as a slush fund to be spent at Dolan's will and whim? Should this out of control mayor, council, and Jan Dolan try to slip through a new bond issue to bail the city out of their fiscal dilemma, no matter how they try to describe or tell us "how necessary" it is, we need to vote it down and make them start living within the bounds of the city's income. ~ And Our Council May Outlaw Political Signage??? Teens' arrest in sign protest roils Glendora By Jim Newton, Times Staff Writer
Even by the notoriously nasty standards of small-town
politics in Glendora, the late-night arrest of two teenagers last week
has taken local elections in this little city to a bracingly new low. Notwithstanding that law and an accompanying set of rules that regulate the placement of campaign material, the same council members who passed the regulations appeared to be violating them â€" and thus the protest by Marshall and Giammalva. While the young women were affixing those bulletins,
however, they were confronted by none other than Councilman Gary
Clifford, who is among those running for reelection. He demanded that
they remove the stickers, and when they refused, the retired police
officer called for backup. They were handcuffed by the side of the road and taken to the station in separate cars. They said they were booked, searched and kept in jail four hours, and interrogated separately while their parents and lawyers were held at bay. Later, when a department spokesman released a statement to the media on the arrests, he identified both teenagers by name but omitted Clifford's identity, describing him only as "one of the victims" of the vandalism. Glendorans are used to backbiting in their local politics â€" recalls and accusations of misconduct have been commonplace in recent years â€" but the spectacle of a councilman and his Police Department placing two teenagers in irons dismayed many residents.
There's now talk of a recall should Clifford win Tuesday. Landmann-Johnsey says she'll happily circulate petitions to make that happen. The teenagers, meanwhile, are reeling. "It's
embarrassing," said Marshall, whose father served on the City Council
until being recalled several years ago. "I have this reputation as a
criminal in Glendora." For his part, Clifford shows no signs of remorse or second thoughts. He says he offered to drop the matter if the young women would remove the stickers, and he accuses them and their supporters of blowing the incident out of proportion, of "trying to build this up into something that it isn't." In addition, Clifford complains that the teenagers were defacing only the signs of candidates they opposed, evidence that their actions were motivated by politics. And although he acknowledges that some signs have been posted on public property, he argues that all sides have done it. The remedy for such violations, he adds, is to file a complaint, not to deface property. "You still don't have the right to vandalize," he said. "It's just not appropriate behavior." Police Chief Chuck Montoya, meanwhile, has been thrust uncomfortably into the middle of the city's political campaign. Interviewed Friday, he said his officers did not cite Clifford because the city attorney had advised the department not to enforce the sign ordinance in cases of political displays. The 1st Amendment, Montoya said, gives wider latitude to candidates than it does to others when it comes to sign advertising.Still, it was the council that adopted rules for political signs in 2004, and those rules which Montoya said lack the force of an ordinance specifically direct candidates not to put up their signs on medians in public streets or on parkways or other public property. Clifford was among the council members who approved those rules. As for the case against the teenagers, Montoya
declined to comment, saying it was still under investigation. It has yet
to be referred to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office,
which would decide whether prosecution was warranted. But he did concede
that the matter was unorthodox. jim.newton@latimes.com
~ Guest Editorial ~ Dolan, Mayor, and Developers Throw Out Rule Book?By Councilman Bob Littlefield bob@boblittlefield.comIf you have been following the local papers lately you have undoubtedly read about how those of us who oppose the recent "surge" in requests to the Scottsdale City Council for increases in height and density are nostalgic reactionaries trying to prevent growth, change and progress. Don’t be fooled by this self-serving special-interest rhetoric. The real choice facing Scottsdale is not between stagnation and growth, it is between smart, managed, citizen-friendly growth on the one hand and unmanaged, special-interest friendly growth that overtaxes our infrastructure and strains city services on the other. We neither can nor should try to prevent Scottsdale from growing. But we owe it to both current and future residents to manage that growth to insure that Scottsdale continues to enjoy the quality of life that caused all of us to want to live here. Take traffic for example. In every survey we conduct Scottsdale residents tell us that traffic congestion is their number one concern. We profess to be so concerned about this problem that we are seriously talking about tossing people out of their homes to widen Chaparral road, uprooting established neighborhoods to put more traffic on Thunderbird and Camelback Roads and tearing up Downtown Scottsdale to accommodate light rail. Yet even while we struggle to devise solutions to Scottsdale’s current level of traffic congestion, we are approving increases in densities that are guaranteed to make the problem even worse. The same is true of other city services such as police, where we are still scrambling to meet the hiring goals for officers we set when you, the voters, approved a dedicated public safety tax in 2004. The excuse we are given every time we are asked to approve some big variance is "just this one time, this is a special case because (fill in the blank)." But if we give a big variance to developer A, how can we say no to developers B, C and D? The answer is we cannot and do not. So each so-called "special case, just this once project" becomes the justification for the next master plan-busting variance. And just how exactly does it qualify as "progress" when the City Council approves a project that even its supporters on the Council agree is mediocre or even ugly? Those of us who oppose unchecked growth and loosening Scottsdale’s design standards are often accused of being anti-business. This is more special-interest hogwash. The vast majority of developers who do business in Scottsdale understand that our high standards are good for business because they make projects in our city more desirable and thus more valuable. These developers propose good projects that meet our citizen-inspired design standards without asking for variances or subsidies. You never read about their projects in the newspaper because they generate no controversy, but they represent good growth and true progress. You see them going up all over town, proving that you can do business in Scottsdale and make excellent profits without compromising our standards or threatening Scottsdale’s quality of life. That is why there is no shortage of developers who are anxious to do business in our city. Throwing out the rule book anytime a developer wants a bigger profit margin on a mediocre project is not "progress," its bad government. Good government is managing the growth that is bound to occur so that it happens without overtaxing our infrastructure, straining city services and eroding Scottsdale’s quality of life. Scottsdale residents should expect no less from their City Council.
~ The City Budget, a Primer ~ Introduction to the Scottsdale Budget Process by Councilman LittlefieldPart 3 As I promised at the end of last week’s column in the Scottsdale Activist, in this column I will talk about how the city has been spending your money over the last few years and what this means for the future of Scottsdale. The party line in Scottsdale city government has been that Scottsdale's finances are in great shape as a result of top-notch financial management by city leaders. The implied message here is that everything is fine, no need for you citizens to pay close attention to what we city leaders are doing with your money, we are doing a great job! Unfortunately, that party line is only partially true. And the parts that are not true will pose big problems for Scottsdale's finances in the future if we do not take action now. The true part is that Scottsdale has for over 50 years had high revenues. But the reason for these high revenues is not sound fiscal policy by city government, its tourism! Scottsdale is one of the top tourist destinations in the entire world, and those tourists spend a lot of money in our town. This is a great thing. But a high income can still lead to financial ruin if it leads to overconfidence and then to overspending and over-borrowing. Unfortunately, that is exactly what Scottsdale is doing. Do you ever wonder why, despite our high city revenues, so many projects approved by the voters in Bond 2000 have never been funded? To the point that the Mayor is asking for another bond issue in 2008? The reason is that the money that could have gone to funding the bonds for those projects and for paying their operating costs has gone to other expenses that you did get a chance to vote on. Examples of this are SkySong, the WestWorld tent, subsidies to (among others) the car dealers, land for parking at WestWorld, and a host of other "extra" expenses. You may agree that some of these were necessary and proper expenses. But the point is that there is no free lunch, each of these items required money that could have gone to things that the voters asked city government to fund. The lesson is that even an organization with a high income can overspend if they don't watch their expenses. And, of course, a high income in the present is not guaranteed to continue in the future. It is clear that Scottsdale's revenue stream will level out in the next few years. Yet for the last few years expenditures have been growing at a faster rate than even these high revenues! If we continue to spend at high levels and to take on more debt (which is what bonding is) then higher taxes are inevitable. We need to start planning now for the downturn in revenues that we know will occur in the not-so-distant future. The City Manager has just released her proposed budget for the 2007/2008 fiscal year, so over the next few days I will be analyzing that. In next week’s Scottsdale Activist I will get into the details what she is proposing to spend next year and what adjustments we on the Council should make to keep Scottsdale's finances sound.
What is the big secret about City employee’s duties? Since the residents appoint these people and support them with our tax dollars why are their duties not made public? The Mayor and council members are always in the news about working on city projects and this and that. What exactly does a City Manager do or is this a deadwood position with a big title? We, the tax and salary providers, should be able to look at a list of duties of each and all individuals employed by the City and have them judged accordingly. While this is going on how about all the credit cards that came to light, in the past, for city employees who dine and gas up on city expense accounts. Exactly how many employees are driving City owned vehicles? The inquiring tax payers need to know how the city funds are spent. R. E. Graham ~ Steinberg: Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is…….. Wow! Now you have done it Mr. Chairman Steve Steinberg. I was first appointed by Mayor Drinkwater to the Neighborhood Beautification Awards Committee in 1987. That committee grew to become the Neighborhood Enhancement Commission and I served two terms on it leaving in 1999. During the same time frame I was the Coronado Complex representative to the Superintendents Advisory Committee for five years and helped with SUSD’s Project Graduation program from it's inception until my last kid graduated from Coronado High School in 1999. At the same time I was a volunteer trained to help both the school district and the Scottsdale Police Department educate parents about gangs and youth violence and occasionally attended meetings to be another set of eyes and ears for Mayor Drinkwater at his request. In 1998 neighborhood activists in the Granite Reef and McDowell Rd. area sight of the old Smitty's store, worked with staff dealing with concerns surrounding the closure of that store and the vacant property and finding suitable development for it, compatible with the surrounding neighborhood. Though not completely successful regarding the housing option existing there we still think the Sr. Center is an outstanding success meeting and exceeding the LEED standards, something the neighborhood was adamant about. In 1998 Mayor Campana appointed me to the Mayors Youth Gang and Youth Violence Task Force to search for a comprehensive approach to keeping Scottsdale kids safe. In 2003 several of us activists joined together to oppose the subsidy for the Wal-Mart/Ellman project at McDowell and Scottsdale Roads, through referendum. Though I was in chemotherapy at the time and could not give 100%, I was surrounded by other activists who not only picked up the slack, but did so while they were active on boards, committees and associations serving Scottsdale. Today, I am proud to be serving on the Housing Board for the City, as well as the Transportation Working group for the City, while holding a full-time job and co-chairing the Scottsdale Coalition So Mr. Chairman Steinberg, if you feel that activists need to get involved, I challenge you to do the same, as well, open your mind, your eyes and ears to other voices and their concerns. None of us are experts if we choose to turn a blind eye to the realities of life in Scottsdale as they are today. Nancy Cantor, a Proud Activist I would like to thank the editors of the Scottsdale Activist for answering Mr. Steinberg's letter for me through their "Editors Note:" following his letter. I could not have said it better myself which saved me the energy and arthritic pain necessary to write the letter. Your publication is the only source the citizens have for getting the inside information the local papers seldom print, although I have to say the Scottsdale Tribune with Brian Powell is doing a much better job of investigative reporting of late! I'll be leaving the city for a while but I'll be in touch. E. Slocomb

~Government Spends 4% of GDP in LegoLand By Craig J. Cantoni You may have heard about the school in Seattle that used Legos to teach students that private ownership of property is evil and collective ownership is good. Denigrating a "class-based, capitalist society" as "unjust and oppressive," the teachers wrote: "Our intention was to promote a contrasting set of values: collectivity, collaboration, resource-sharing, and full democratic participation." Coincidentally, in response to a recent article of mine that made the case that corporate fraud pales in comparison to government fraud, a Seattle teacher retorted that corporate fraud has a greater impact on society and the economy, because "96 percent of GDP is controlled by corporations and only four percent is controlled and spent by the government." The economic ignorance in Seattle is astonishing. Maybe Starbucks is putting something in its coffee that addles the brain. Unfortunately, the addling is not restricted to Seattle or to faux intellectuals in faux Bohemian cafes. Judging by responses from well-off Phoenix suburbanites to my newspaper articles over the years, by my experience in guest lecturing at Arizona State University, by my even more depressing experience in attending conferences at the ASU school of education, by my experience in heading a large political-action group in metro New York City, by the hate mail received from teachers union bigwigs and rank-and-file teachers, by the economic misinformation and disinformation disseminated by the mainstream media, and by the fact that all of the announced candidates for U.S. president are statists but are not characterized as such by popular pundits on the left and right judging by these and other experiences and clues, the Seattle teachers are not on the fringes of American thinking. I use the word "thinking" loosely. A thinking person doesn’t have to read Das Kapital to understand the foolishness of Marxian egalitarianism and collective ownership. He can simply look at photos of the bread lines in the former Soviet Union, where the average citizen spent two hours a day waiting in line to buy necessities but where Communist Party bigwigs had their own stores. Or he can look at photos of dreary Soviet apartment complexes, where the communal hallways and toilets were disgusting because no one owned them. But if photos aren’t enough, a thinking person can read about the gulags, the forced labor, the banning of all entrepreneurial activity, the starvation, and the use of walls, barbed wire, armed guards, and snarling dogs to keep people from escaping to countries with property rights. Or he can stand at the Arizona-Mexico border and watch millions of Mexicans escaping a country without property rights to a country with them. Better yet, he can look at the Index of Economic Freedom, which shows that countries without economic freedom and property rights are dirt-poor and authoritarian. A thinking person would know from history that the more collectivist a society, the more authoritarian the government. It sounds counterintuitive and that’s the problem but collectivism and egalitarianism depend on coercion while capitalism and individualism depend on cooperation. A thinking teacher would go to the Internet and in two minutes discover that the government doesn’t consume four percent of GDP. In fact, spending by all levels of government as a percent of GDP is almost eight times higher than the four percent claimed by the Seattle teacher. And if the better measure of national income is used as a base instead of GDP, 45 percent of economic output is now consumed by the government, versus 12 percent prior to 1930. But to stick with GDP for a moment, federal spending alone will rise from the current high teens to nearly 40 percent of GDP by 2075, if something isn’t done about rising entitlement spending, especially for Medicare. And if state and local spending is added to this projection, well over half of economic output will be consumed by the government by 2075. That’s a fancy way of saying that our kids and grandkids will spend most of their working lives working for the government instead of themselves. The Seattle teacher probably professes to care for kids, but apparently not enough to warn them about the life of serfdom they face. Unfortunately, teachers who don’t know the facts can’t teach the facts. Perhaps the teacher is bitter because he believes the popular myth that teachers are underpaid and not getting their share of the wealth produced by capitalism. The fact is, education students have average SAT scores about 200 points lower than civil engineering students, but in many states, K-12 teachers earn about the same as civil engineers, when earnings are adjusted for days worked and employee benefits. I know these facts because my son, a high school sophomore, is interested in civil engineering as a career. With my help, he knows the entrance requirements of engineering schools versus other majors. If he wanted to major in education, he could coast for the remainder of high school and stop taking honors and advanced placement courses in science and math. In defense of the teacher, why would a teacher or anyone else know the facts about government spending when newspapers and other media across the land hide the facts? On that point, it’s a safe bet that your local newspaper doesn’t regularly publish charts showing the per-household cost of local, state and federal governments, or comparing increases in government spending to increases in inflation and population. The major newspaper that publishes my column doesn’t do that, either, but it used to publish a scorecard of the performance of state legislators, giving good scores to big spenders and bad scores to fiscal conservatives. Then newspapers have the audacity to claim that they don’t have a big-government bias. As long as teachers, editors and other members of the establishment believe that collectivism and egalitarianism are superior to capitalism and individualism, government’s share of GDP will keep increasing until we find ourselves living in a utopian Legoland, where the Legos will be built by the capitalistic Chinese, who appreciate property rights because they’ve experienced the tragedy of state ownership. An author and columnist, Mr. Cantoni can be reached at ccan2@aol.com. by Eddie Jeffers Editors Note: I don’t usually print these types of pieces but have included it because of a personal request by a relative of Eddie Jeffers. As a preface to this piece, it should be remembered that every military person serving in the Iraq conflict is a volunteer which is totally different than the war in Viet Nam where most all American combatants were drafted and had no choice. These volunteers have gone back to Iraq two, three and four times by their own choice because they understand the absolute need for us to win this war and the great amount of good that is being completed. We even have injured and disable military personnel who are pleading with the military to return to finish the job that needs to be completed so the Iraqi's can live in peace and the terrorists don’t come to America. See the Section on the movie "Obsession" under "Information You Can Use" at the bottom of the Scottsdale Activist for more information on the goals of the Islamic extremists.Hello Everyone, I wanted to share an article my son Eddie sent me from Iraq. I was not going to send it out through the usual means; I'm looking to have this published somehow. I just felt after reading it again this morning that I wanted people to begin reading it and begin/continue to pray for our brave men and women in uniform. I'm not sure how many letters or articles you've ever read from the genre of "News from the Front," but this is one of the best I've ever read, including all of America's wars. As I was reading this, I forgot that it was my son who had written it. My emotions range from great pride to great sorrow, knowing that my little boy (22 years old) has become this man. He is my hero. Thank all of you for your prayers for him; he needs them now more than ever. God bless. David Jeffers -------------------------------------------------------- Hope Rides Alone By Eddie Jeffers
I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families again...and yet, I too, am just a boy....my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead. I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid...because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me from around street corners and windows, and it is always there. There are the demons that follow me, and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own...but that are necessary for survival. I've made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world, who walk in the same streets...who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not and to think, I volunteered for this... And I am ignorant to the rest of the world...or so I thought. But even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi, Iraq, the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler. I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehan’s, and the Al Franken’s, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word boys and girls, because that's what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantryman is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class. People like Cindy Sheehan are ignorant. Not just to this war, but to the results of their idiotic ramblings, or at least I hope they are. They don't realize its effects on this war. In this war, there are no Geneva Conventions, no cease fires. Medics and Chaplains are not spared from the enemy's brutality because it's against the rules. I can only imagine the horrors a military Chaplain would experience at the hands of the enemy. The enemy slinks in the shadows and fights a coward's war against us. It is effective though, as many men and women have died since the start of this war. And the memory of their service to America is tainted by the inconsiderate remarks on our nation's news outlets. And every day, the enemy changes...only now, the enemy is becoming something new. The enemy is transitioning from the Muslim extremists to Americans. The enemy is becoming the very people whom we defend with our lives. And they do not realize it. But in denouncing our actions, denouncing our leaders, denouncing the war we live and fight, they are isolating the military from society...and they are becoming our enemy. Democrats and peace activists like to toss the word "quagmire" around and compare this war to Vietnam. In a way they are right, this war is becoming like Vietnam. Not the actual war, but in the isolation of country and military. America is not a nation at war; they are a nation with its military at war. Like it or not, we are here, some of us for our second, or third times; some even for their fourth and so on. Americans are so concerned now with politics, that it is interfering with our war. Terrorists cut the heads off of American citizens on the internet...and there is no outrage, but an American soldier kills an Iraqi in the midst of battle, and there are investigations, and sometimes soldiers are even jailed...for doing their job. It is absolutely sickening to me to think our country has come to this. Why are we so obsessed with the bad news? Why will people stop at nothing to be against this war, no matter how much evidence of the good we've done is thrown in their face? When is the last time CNN or MSNBC or CBS reported the opening of schools and hospitals in Iraq? Or the leaders of terror cells being detained or killed? It's all happening, but people will not let up their hatred of President Bush. They will ignore the good news, because it just might show people that he was right. America has lost its will to fight. It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world. The crazy thing of it all is that the American people have not even been asked to sacrifice a single thing. It's not like World War Two, where people rationed food, and turned in cars to be made into metal for tanks. The American people have not been asked to sacrifice anything. Unless you are in the military or the family member of a service member, its life as usual...the war doesn't affect you. But it affects us. And when it is over, and the
troops come home, and they try to piece together what's left of them
after their service...where will the detractors be then?
Where will the Cindy Sheehan’s be to comfort and talk to soldiers and
help them sort out the last couple years of their lives, most of which
have been spent dodging death and wading through the deaths of their
friends? They will be where they always are, somewhere far
away, where the horrors of the world can't touch them. Somewhere
where they can complain about things they will never experience in their
lifetime; things that the young men and women of America have willingly
taken upon their shoulders. Right now, the burden is all on the American soldiers. Right now, hope rides alone. But it can change, it must change. Because there is only failure and darkness ahead for us as a country, as a people, if it doesn't. Let's stop all the political nonsense, let's stop all the bickering, let's stop all the bad news, and let's stand and fight! Isn't that what America is about anyway? shoutandspout@scottsdaleactivist.com ~ Why should the mayor worry about anything? She wears rose-colored glasses that were purchased for her by her husband, and are polished daily by Jan Dolan, Deb Robberson, Neil Shearer, Jay Osborn, Judy Register, Mary O'Connor, or any one of the many "know nothing" flunkies she surrounds herself with to protect her from the stark and naked (Opps, can't use that word) reality of how she and her cronies are damaging Scottsdale. ~ Derouin, Nesvig, Drake and Lane? OMG!! Where are my ballots so I can vote for them now to clean up the Manross Mess and fire Dolan and company!!! ~ If Teri Traaen's true feeling could be heard, we'd bet they would be: "I did as I was ordered". But to shut her up, they gave her enough to get her through to retirement. This entire episode was a skanky and underhanded Dolan/Manross/Robberson trick to save Dolan's candy (butt) from being fired. ~ Interesting. Let's take a look at this. The mayor doesn't want the "Salty Senorita" checking partiers ID's at the door as required by Arizona State Laws. Just how is that protecting the citizens of Scottsdale or where the patrons drive after downing a few ounces or probably more lubrious libations. Is she personally responsible for anything that happens to underage drinkers being that she made that stupid statement publicly, or has she single-handedly put the city in the position of being totally liable? ~Thank the Lord Almighty for the "Winds of Change", wouldn't the sea’s change from Miss Mary, Mc"Osterman" and possibly Ecton to a breath of "Drinkwater" fresh air. Geeze Louise, it might even mean a level playing field across and top to bottom for the citizens of this city to actually believe once again in city governance rather than an imperial developer run local government. So where do we sign up for a shot at this opportunity before we pack our bags, pull up stakes and leave the current mess behind us? ~ Watching the brake lights on the 101 where the cameras are is reminiscent of Christmas: a lot of blinking red lights while the money rolls in for Dolan to spend as she wishes. What a system!! ~ Bring on the "Lingerie Bowl"!! What a great idea that fits right in with our "Hip and shakin' Downtown" during Super Bowl Week. Why is Manross such a Prude? She asked for a "Hip Downtown" and now that she has it, she doesn't like the "spice" it brings to town; Too (darned) bad!! I think we should have a "Lingerie Bowl" every year; maybe even every spring and fall to celebrate the weather! ~You know that the housing market is hurting when you see a bunch of FOR LEASE signs in your neighborhood because the resident can’t sell their home at a decent price – they are forced to lease it to keep it. We have four homes for lease and only one for sale in my neighborhood. People want OUT of Scottsdale but they are competing with the tons of empty condos and the high-end lease market now. It’s just not fair to the residents. This is what screws up our neighborhoods and causes them to go downhill. Is this all part of Dolan’s plan???? To destroy our neighborhoods so that they become slums and can be bought up cheaply by height and density hungry developers - like those who are planning to abscond with the Minnezona area? Just what I thought………. ~Is it really true that Jim Derouin might run for mayor in the next election? He is one of the most upstanding, intelligent, and well-spoken citizens I know! He would certainly be able to dump the 7 PR people on staff that Queen Mary carries around with her like finger puppets. What an excellent choice he’d be for Mayor!!!! Positive change here we come – he has the votes of our entire family!! ~ it's been fun watching the city trying to drain certain ponds on the old Villa Monterey golf course only to see it rain and fill them back up again. Can't you guys find the input to those ponds and seal them off so they won't refill on you? ~The interim Chief Planner for our glorious city is clueless. I heard that in a recent discussion regarding a well know project, that she didn’t know the actual name nor any details about it and worse, why the City approved it to begin with. I know there is a learning curve, but again we must look to Dolan and her lack of leadership to see just where this new move of assigning the inept to an important position is going to take us. Connie Padian is sadly and most probably unknowingly just another Dolan mouthpiece and patsy at best; just another notch on Dolan's gun belt. Randy Grant was tired of being Dolan’s patsy and fall guy! ~I had to laugh out loud when Manross said (in her Address) that Transportation was her #1 focus in the upcoming year. Wasn’t that her #1 focus for the past two years, and in the 4 years prior to that? She is SO not a leader. We are SO screwed up one side and down the other until we clean house in city hall. ~ We just found the new Dog Park near Hayden and McDonald. Great place! Thanks! ~ I would definitely vote for all of the people mentioned as possibilities in the "Winds of Change" article you ran last week. Is there a chance Derouin would run? That man has more class and intelligence in only half of his brain when he's sleeping than Manross and Dolan have total when wide awake and scheming about how to fleece us again! ~As our City grows in leaps and bounds and with the sudden influx of spring training baseball junkies to our area, it seems that people are just downright rude anymore. They bring to our beautiful city all of their bad manners like littering our streets, speeding in our residential areas, and cutting off the elderly in crosswalks because they just don’t want to wait. As a long time resident, I feel like this place is out of control. ….. just like and because of our Mayor and Jan Dolan! ~ OMG!!! Nan is going to run! Our prayers have been answered!! A team of Nesvig and Derouin as well as the others is unbeatable as far as we're concerned. Let's do it! ~Can you just tell that it’s another upcoming election year???? Manross’ profession that she does not want light rail in downtown Scottsdale is an utter JOKE! Campaign rhetoric for sure! All she has to do it say she approves Modern Street cars, the "other option", and we are in the SAME BOAT! Tracks, trains, the whole ball of wax! Someone should tell Manross that it’s time for her to cash in her chips and find a nice quiet place to retire where no one knows her. Take Ecton with her! She is such a bald-faced liar… ~I saw a young child waiting for a school bus the other days – he was standing on a rather isolated street corner well hidden from view – an easy abduction target. He looked to be about 7 years old. What is the Scottsdale school system thinking, not placing that bus stop in a conspicuous place; and what about his parents? Don’t they recognize that danger? Scottsdale isn’t that safe a city anymore. ~ Gee, the city still hasn't put cross walk lines across from the park north of Camelback on Granite Reef where they put that stupid and totally unnecessary "neighborhood island". Have they had second thoughts? Geez, I certainly hope so for the safety of the children. ~I see nothing wrong with Littlefield calling our esteemed Mayor on the carpet when necessary. Manross’ problem is that she isn’t scripted to respond to his "in your face" discussion points and feels disadvantaged by that! Ya, it really does make her look like the fool that she is! Good for Littlefield. ~I think that someone should start an organization that interacts with the City to harness local talent for our renovation projects. Maybe we’d finally get back some of the City character! I might be in favor of projects if New York, Chicago, and California people weren’t designing and building them to look like their polluted, overbuilt, and congested poor excuses for "cities".
