 ~ The Future of Scottsdale

Scottsdale needs to steadily grow with visionary planning and an intuitive purpose while maintaining the open space, low density, and family lifestyle for which Scottsdale is renowned; Not fast, loose, and furiously building out of character buildings and skyscrapers with reckless abandon without planning or purpose as is happening under Mary and Jan.

~ Leave Charros Alone

As long as women have "private" organizations and places of business where "ladies only" are allowed, there cannot be a case against the Charros or any other "male only" organization or business, religious or otherwise, for discrimination.

The only exception to that would be if the Charros don’t have an "arms length" contract with the city for the use of the Giants stadium. An "arms length" contract would be the same written contract offered to any other private organization or business that might use city facilities for their own use by contract to benefit the city or it’s residents.

To deny the Charros to operate as they have operated for years would be a serious miscarriage of justice to say the least. We have not heard of one woman who was refused membership in the Charros, or if there has ever been one invited.

Does it really matter? An emphatic "NO"!!

The point is simple: The Charros are a most highly respected organization throughout the state for their unselfish and charitable contributions to the city and other organizations and such successful operations or organization need not be stifled or controlled when control is not needed or warranted.

For Michele deLaFreniere or John Greco to charge the Charros with discrimination is like telling the Knights of Columbus, the Masons, or other religious or private men’s or women’s organizations that they are in serious violation of the law.

Don Logan of the Scottsdale Human Resources Division clearly stated "the city has no legal standing to mandate how the Charros may organize themselves or diversify their membership. That’s a business decision that needs to be considered by the Charros organization". End of story.

If Michele deLaFreniere and John Greco would pay as much attention to the tens of millions of taxpayers dollars being frittered away uselessly by the Manross/Dolan administration as they do to what’s contained privately within someone’s shorts, they could claim they are helping the city get better. Until then, they are considered nothing more than opportunists and half-baked rabble rousers without a reasonable charge, goal, or cause.

~Blame Game Continues……

It seems the city continues to claim that the northern residents in the are to blame for the flood mess in the north.

Excuse Us!!

The residents as well as the builders and developers are required to conform to city codes, rules, and regulations promulgated by, guess who? The city council, city manager, city planning staff, and the city legal department.

There you have it.

The city manager is clearly the first and paramount person to blame, then city planning staff, and on down the line to the inspectors who are supposed to make sure all the rules, codes, and regulations were or are followed to the letter.

EXACTLY!!! But, this course of action apparently was never followed.

Did the residents want a designated flood control channel?

Absolutely Not!

It would be a major scar on the land and would not solve the existing or potential problems.

Why? Because you never know where the most rainwater will fall, where it will flow, and in what quantities it will fall, or for that matter in what areas.

So, what should have happened with an alert and educated staff who knows the desert?

The city manager and staff should have known;

  • the intimate geography of the area,

  • where the natural channels were,

  • how much the maximum amount of rainwater could come down these natural channels and,

  • they should have advised the builders on an individual basis with the specific requirements for each buildable lot based upon the expected maximum flow for each natural channel where heavy rainwater runoff had been or could be expected to be experienced.

  • It doesn’t take rocket science to figure all of this out but apparently, the "bulbs" gracing our city staff "tree" are rather dim…………….. and getting dimmer as new projects are presented to them for their approval.

Could the problem be that most all of the high end department heads brought in by Dolan who never lived here or in any desert area and are also not from this area, therefore don’t have a clue about any of these types of situations?

For us Desert Rats, it’s not rocket science at all is it………………….

~ A Rude, Vindictive, and Retaliatory Act

The sexual preference or someone’s perceived gender, be it male, female, gay, lesbian, or transgendered, does not give a person the right to usurp or violate the rights of others who wish to take some "private time free of conflict" by using the security and privacy of a restroom to relieve themselves comfortably.

For Michele deLaFreniere to make such ridiculous, self-centered, and self-serving demands of private businesses through a city ordinance to control the use of restrooms smacks of a vindictive, retaliatory, in-your-face attack on the basic rights of every business and every city in America.

Where and when will this nonsense stop?

If you are of an "alternative lifestyle" as some prefer call it to be politically correct, your rights are protected by Federal, State and other laws which, if enforced, are all that is necessary as long as you act in a responsible, caring, and respectful manner to those around you.

But, if you openly, rudely, and notoriously participate in acts which cause major revulsion and a fear of you by others, such as lifting your dress and whipping out your "Johnson" to urinate in a ladies restroom, you have openly and notoriously asked for mass ridicule by those who do not have the "apparatus" you have which is extremely offensive in a ladies restroom. In addition, you have greatly offended the vast majority of those who were so unfortunate as to witness your gross indulgence and lack of respect in a politically incorrect and rude action. Couldn’t you just sit down and do what you needed to do? It is just that simple.

Along the same vein, should you decide to use the men's restroom and raise your dress to urinate in the urinal, undoubtedly there will most probably be crude comments made and probably pictures taken with photo-phones. Why shouldn't you expect that to happen? After all, you are not the "norm" for the men's room now are you? Why become a spectacle? Why not try to fit in to whatever gender you feel most comfortable instead of portraying yourself as an exhibitionist causing most everyone in the room to be very uncomfortable, if not physically sick at the sight of your actions??

Unfortunately, it's human nature to make lewd, lurid, lascivious, and crude comments out of sheer shock and embarrassment for those around to ease the tension for the vast majority of the people in the room when someone acts in a manner which is in stark difference to what's given as the 'Norm" for human behavior in the given situation.

If you are truly are transgendered and truly care about your fellow human beings, you would not flaunt your gender, or lack thereof, for people to see or comment upon. If you are so proud that you still have your "Johnson" and display it from under a dress for all to see or hear in a ladies restroom, or in a men's restroom, you need psychiatric care in the worst way, and we’ll pray for your rapid recovery to some level of respectability and responsibility to your fellow human beings.

In our opinion, this is a blatant attack on all businesses and all human beings no matter their gender, and the city council needs to address this issue by determining that they have zero control over such issues in any private business in the city of Scottsdale and therefore not take any action on Mr./MS. Michele deLaFreniere’s charges and complaint other than to address the complaint by stating that there is absolutely no justification for any action of any kind in this case by the city.

~ It's Past Time to Shut Down Club "NEXT"

Why is the council pussyfooting around this problem? They voted not to approve the CUP, and again as it was attempted to be illegally reintroduced, then withdrawn.

Why not simply dismiss the appeal, close the club and take your chances in court. The council does that with many other controversial issues, why not this one?

Close Club "NEXT"! There is absolutely no reason why it should remain open for business when it doesn't meet the rules, has outstanding Code Enforcement claims and will not clear the violations.

~ DRB is Not the Be All, End All

The Sept. 6 Scottsdale Republic Editorial, "Developers take heed, an election is coming," is out in left field on the issues of the 4333 N. Scottsdale Road building.

The 4333 Building project requires that an existing building be demolished and a very different building take its place. I was at the City Council meeting Sept. 4, and I spoke after I did my homework.

If Development Review Board decisions were not to be questioned, there would be no means of calling those decisions back for further scrutiny. Since there is, then calling it back is not wrong.

Scottsdale's boards and commissions review their bylaws, goals and objects every two or three years. It just might be time to take a look at all of our boards and commissions by means of a charter review. Let's find out if they are geared to address the challenges of infill development and how they work and communicate with one another.

Now that we are involved with infill projects, largely in the areas south of Indian Bend Road, anyone who wants to develop is going to have to make an extra effort in addressing design and outreach. Why? Because the Downtown Plan is under review. Those attending a town hall agreed the development guidelines are out of date by 20 years and need to be refined to address, among other things, design and character, land use and urban form, inter-connectivity and boundaries.

The 4333 Building brings a design into the downtown area that has raised many issues with longtime residents and small-business owners from whether the design is compatible with the character of the existing neighborhoods. Fifth Avenue across the street and the Old Town area, to the site plan, landscaping and how green the project will be. It also calls into question if the existing DRB process is sufficient to deal with a large number of redevelopment questions.

This particular project snuck up on a lot of us because it did not have to go through the Planning Commission. The neighborhood outreach for DRB does not require the same outreach efforts by the developer that the Planning Commission does. If the policy is not in writing and required, the outreach will not be done by the developer. Sad, but true.

The city did what it is required to do, but for this project in this place there needs to be greater effort and discussion by the developer and his neighbors. It would just make good business sense, not to mention solve problems or stop them before they get started.

It is important to make every effort when developing in the mature neighborhoods of Scottsdale. Very often, I am told, developers go away from Scottsdale -because it is too hard to deal with us.

All of this is a good reason why. No resident with an ounce of common sense enjoys going to City Council, or meetings of the boards and commissions, to sit for hours, stand up and explain in three minutes why you do or do not support or like an issue or project, or even plead for consideration of a problem that confronts your neighborhood.

Unfortunately, that is right where we are today because the long-range planning, vision and guidelines, policy and procedures, are not in place to better serve the developer and the community.

~ A Scottsdale Legend Speaks Volumes

Letter to the Scottsdale City Council:

Thank you for your votes to bring back this building (4333) for review. As you all know, the buck stops with the Mayor and Council. There is nothing wrong with reviewing any commission action as you are responsible to the citizens of Scottsdale.

Downtown is the heart and real character of Scottsdale. We cannot afford to lose it with buildings that look like they belong in the next century. Please have them "soften" this design to something that is more upscale Scottsdale.

    ~ "Dreaded Activists" Speak

Over a period of time I have read articles by just a couple of people who keep decrying that those "dreaded activist" of South Scottsdale are hampering the progress of the southern section of the city in this paper.

Are we really different than those "dreaded activist" from the North who had never even gotten that title by their own community?

No we are not, the truth is we are just as concerned about the way the city is going to "redevelop" in the South and Downtown as the residents of the North were in their future plans for development, and as a result from that they, the "dreaded activist", worked with the city to develop ordinances to protect the mountains, they adopted ordinances such as the ESLO (environmentally sensitive land ordinance) and other types of restrictions.

For 5 years now the residents of the south have been at the Mayor and Councils throats to give us those same considerations.

  • Let’s sit down and discuss character areas and what is acceptable.

  • Let’s sit down and discuss where the added height and density may be considered as this section of the city is already the densest area.

  • Let’s sit down and discuss infrastructure issues, transportation impacts, and city services increases and

  • in general, let’s get a plan on the table first so we are all on the same page of what the city is thinking.

  • For 5 years the South has gotten properties up zoned for height and density increases and projects that affect mature communities and their quality of life. These projects have been approved by the city council with no plans regarding how you redevelop mature areas.

For 4 years we have asked for the Redevelopment Committee which still exists in the city codes but is "de-commissioned" to be brought back and manned with a resident majority and 1 planning commissioner and 1 DRB member on a rotating basis for input.

For 2 years we have waited for the council to act on the issue of village planning committees brought forward by Councilwoman Drake.

There are thousands of South Scottsdale residents who love where they live as opposed to a few and we are not asking for anything more than what the city did when the North came calling for the same thing we are asking for, a plan.

South Scottsdale is ready to move forward, but we are not budging on these issues until the city brings us a plan.

     ~Verizon to Rip Off Seniors?

I just finished reading the article (Monday, 9/10 Trib) on the "new" phone and "special" plan for Seniors by Verizon. What a rip off!! You can get phones from other services for free with monthly costs which are the same or less but have more minutes.

Before Seniors fall for this nonsense, the only thing Verizon offered that is different is the 3 red buttons and the 911 button which many Seniors (70’s & 80’s) can’t easily see or put their fingers on anyway unless there is a lot of light. Many can’t remember what number works with the memory buttons anyway.

Verizon is trying to take unfair advantage of the Seniors naiveté by trying to say they have a "special phone" just for Seniors.

That’s nothing but pure promotional poppycock! We would love to give our parents a phone they could easily use and this one certainly isn’t it.

If they really want to do something for Seniors, get rid of the special buttons and extra junk and give Senior’s a simple, large key cell phone at a fair price with a reasonable number of minutes.

~Cultural Tourism and Radio....Hm-m-m Sister Cities???

Getting me out of my air conditioned cave in Scottsdale, Arizona, in the summertime, is not easy to do, particularly in the middle of the day. This summer, no exception.

But………………I didn’t come down with cabin fever this summer. Nope! Had an epiphany!

Cruising the "Net"…… I found BBC Scotland. Wow! Saved my mind (yeah, I know there is question whether I had one to begin with).

Sorry, radio Arizona, but they have won my heart and the mind in question. Such great programming, great music and get a delivery and discussion of the news that we just don’t find here.

On occasion Alice Cooper has provided the same type of programming, but usually I am doing a wrap-up for work and can’t listen closely. And honest, Alice, Ricky Ross has a tendency to throw in information and insight, with a laugh and personal aside, that are grabbers, and in such a way that you think you’re sitting across the table talking to family or leaning on the fence talking to a neighbor. And there are no howling commercials.

Ricky has the talent, skill, knowledge and experience and enjoys sharing the magic of music.

Yep, kids, I do dig Rock, R&B, Folk, Pop, Reggae, Jazz and Classical……eclectic I am and long may it be so.

I have long had an affinity for Scotland, even had a fellowship in my long ago, misbegotten youth to study at the University of Edinburgh, thanks to a family friend, who probably wanted me to get out of town. (My activist roots were showing even in high school.)

I found BBC Scotland this year, while researching news stories on the elections in the UK. At the end of a newscast there was this really terrific theme song, and I emailed them to find out the name of it. I burned a CD of it and my youngest son programmed my fancy schmancy computer to play that as my wake-up in the morning.

Well, the news guys, at BBC Scotland forwarded the email I sent trying to get the name of the music, because it was not their theme.

That is how I found Tony Currie and "Nightshift," it is his theme. If you ever get a chance, listen to this piece of music, by George Martin, "Serenade to a Double Scotch." Better yet try to stream BBC Scotland and if you can’t find it, call me.

Tony’s program is everything I think radio should be. Having helped my husband with his radio program for 11 years, the ability to mix the music with special programs takes skill and experience and love of the game and a desire to share all the magic.

So, while I am at the keyboard pounding out columns, research papers, other things to annoy those who think activists should get lost, these guys and I have chatted about the deluge of rain in Scotland and the intense heat of Scottsdale. The many aspects of our Fourth of July (they did tributes to our 4th), and the ins and outs and who’s and what’s of music.

I could do my research and chat, too. Didn’t think I could multi-task, did ya? I have probably been ADD for all of my life, so it was a no brainer, no pun intended.

Don’t want to see Ricky go, but he does have a life, a family and a career, as very a successful Pop star. Check out his web site, www.deaconblue.com

Take the time to listen……very much worth it.

Radio is still an important part of communications, and to my way of thinking, a key element in linking people. Check out my friends at

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/programmes/nightshift/

Click here or cut and paste the above and then explore. There is so much there to hear. Bryan Burnett in the early morning here in Scottsdale with "rock and roll" that crosses the ages, from the 60’s to the present. Vic Galloway who does his music things especially when he gives new groups a shot at air time, but he also does a program called "Mouthing Off." I love this program and we could use something like this here, because it allows teenagers to weigh in on current events and topics in focus in the community. Brilliant program and Vic has a way with kids, that is respectful and fun all at the same time. Go Vic.

Two programs that blow my mind are "The Jazz House" with Stephen Duffy, a jazz vocalist and musician, and "Classics Unwrapped," presented by Jamie MacDougall, who is the Jamie MacDougall that a friend and I heard sing with the St. Louis Symphony. I was reminded of that while listening to him during the last "Proms In The Park Concert." We have nothing like these concerts here, it is simply to hot. What makes their radio programs a treat is that they love what they do and they can share the magic that is music.

I mentioned research, something that I love to do, so I have book marked programs like the "Book Café" and the "Beechgrove Potting Shed." When I am not writing and being a painful activist, I read, several books a week, the "Book Café" brings interviews with authors and educators and publishers and much more. "Beechgrove Potting Shed," makes all of the ladybugs and earthworms that my husband had sent to the house through the Post Office seem perfectly normal, now. Truly provides an understanding of "companion planting."

Ian Anderson will just have to get used to me and my crew, because we have taken a liking to his program of folk music and interesting asides from the mysterious Professor.

The Lord of the "Nightshift," who got me hooked on all of the above, makes sure that some programs that run during the day get second hearings overnight and combines it with the best music selections and commentary that can include receipts and poetry, on Monday night. For those familiar with the Pirate Radio stations of the late 1960’s, you might try "Googling" Tony Currie. The life and times of "Pirate Radio" has been well documented by Currie, as well as other areas of British broadcasting, many of which he has been involved with personally.

I have taken BBC Scotland to New Orleans and hooked the bull-horn up to speakers on a computer so we could rock while re-building a house. They have shared in my joyous experience of getting pictures of the various snakes that have come knocking here in the valley, looking for shade and water during this very hot, dry summer. They have, probably with amusement, allowed me to blather on about being activist dealing with many of the same issues that exist in their City of Glasgow, housing, transportation, development, education, and so on, etc. and whatever.

An interesting fact: While riding the Mollie Trolley in Old Scottsdale, which ranks right up there with things that I love to do, I have met many visitors to our City from the United Kingdom, with more than a few from Scotland. On my way to a City workshop one morning, I even took a family who lives here in the Valley, and their family visiting from Scotland, on a "walking trip" (not to be confused with hiking), strollers and all, over the new pedestrian bridge and into the Fifth Avenue area one morning before the trolley service started for the day.

That is how I have spent my summer vacation and it has been the best in many, many moons. I am thinking that Glasgow, Scotland, would make a great Sister City. Thank you Mayor Manross, I will lead the delegation.

    Peace.

~ Living in the Land of Oz by Michael Merrill

    ~Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Okay Ozites, I have to tell you. I am on the verge of just giving up on trying to make sense of our city any more. This week Mac Cummings, one of our "principal planners" sent a letter to the developers of the WaterView Project with 83 points that the Planning Department did not like about the designs presented.

What I found absurd is that all of a sudden the City is now saying that the project does not conform to its surroundings which for once I have to agree with Mac on.

Now I am confused. This is the same principal planner that gave the Okie Dokie for the above pile of design manure to be placed in a setting that it also does not conform to its surroundings.

For the WaterView issue the City uses the surrounding neighborhood as the example and in the issue of the 4333 building the City uses the Galleria and not what actually surrounds the building, which is of an older era like the neighborhood around the WaterView project.

For too many years now the City has mish mashed the issues of "Design, Character, Density, and Height" into one of the most horrid examples of stupidity in development existing in the western hemisphere. This has all been accomplished because this city has no plan for any of this and are doing it all in such a hap hazard manner that if it is not stopped they will indeed destroy this city.

I am tired and hopeful that the readers of this web site come to understand that the City they moved to, and the reasons they moved here, are quickly being destroyed in the Downtown area and it is spreading out to other areas of the City in a very fast manner.

Downtown has become an area that residents do not travel to much any longer and the tourists who have come here for years are horrified at what is happening.

It has become awash in empty condos and even developers are already placing plans on hold. In the meantime, we, the taxpayers, continue to have to pay for the increased City services, the increase in infrastructure repairs and upgrades, and the impacts of traffic conditions.

What do you think that moving these fire stations at a price tag of $5 million each, or more, is not part of the costs we are already paying? Do you think that having to purchase at least one new fire truck to battle a high rise fire is cheap, as well as the extra personnel we are going to have to hire to man these stations?

Who is paying for this million dollar transportation master plan that is only going to give some "recommendations" for mass transit? The Wicked Witch and the Wizard already have plans to spend even more taxpayers money to pay HDR again in a "team effort of cities" to look at the possibility of "future light rail routes".

While I think sprucing up Scottsdale Road is a good idea I shutter at the cost of 27 million dollars. I have equal concerns over the fact that the designer is tied to light rail projects the same as HDR. Does this pose the threat of us paying for the easier converted infrastructure now because the City leaders are, indeed planning on doing this until we vote all their butts out of office?

We already know we do not have enough police "yet" for the City even after we split the tax increase a few short years ago. I am not going into that issue, but we are going to need more of them also, and they are not free either.

Who is paying for the new pump stations the City has to install to make sure the high rises have adequate water pressure for the fire sprinklers? Who do you think paid for the new water lines for the "South Bank Waterfront development by Fredrick R. Unger" that had almost all of the Stetson Merchants area torn up?

Who told the press just a couple of short years ago that the City had the required services needed for all of this new development in downtown and mature communities? The Wizard did!

We still have the preserve to pay for (as well as the Sky Swindle project) and let’s not even mention that there are two developments that will be seeking City assistance for infrastructure costs or "incentives," and one of them is supposed to be the Los Arcos Crossing project.

Watch it Ozites, this is an area that did not have the redevelopment designation lifted. It was just lifted for the properties in the Downtown Overlay designation, as I understood the Council action.

Now there is serious talk about the city going for a Bond in the next election and we never completed what the last bond was supposed to cover.

Here is the point to this rant Ozites: this city has run amuck in stupidity under the present leadership and the influx of the Jan Dolan "team".

Our own City financial guru has repeatedly warned this Council, and in a round about way the "staff," that we are running out of money and expenditures are outweighing what you are bringing in. He has repeatedly told the supposed leaders of Oz that they need to curb their spending spree as we are approaching build out and development revenues will become scarce. That leaves who/what to cover the bills when the city is over extended?

Do you really believe the Wicked Witch and the Wizard are going to tell you, truthfully, why they will raise your taxes soon, or be out of office in 4 more years when the Umpa Lumpa turd’s really hit the fan?

The Wicked Witch and the all knowing Wizard can keep touting there triple AAA bond rating, but when the City hits that point I will guarantee you that the taxpayers of this City will be reamed to pay for it.

Wait, in reality we already are paying for it and everybody better start praying to whoever you pray to that Bean Counter Jim is not correct about the same recession I think is coming.

    ~Coming Clean in Oz

Okay, I now hate editors and their lawyers as it appears we need to make a change in my graphic language. Last week I spoke with the editor and asked him if I renamed a Council member a Flaming (A$$&%#@), because he deserved it, if he would print that. Well, that was a pretty quick "I doubt it". I responded later with maybe calling him a Flaming (B$@%$#) and I thought we were okay with that. When the edition came out I was laughing when I saw this "Flaming (%$@%$#)" in my text. Tonight I learned the legal opinion was not to print either.

Again I will make it clear that I am not politically correct by any means, and I have very colorful language as well as an extensive unpublished dictionary of my own colorful nicknames.

There are only two things I fear in my life one being my wife and the other being my dentist and I am not big on censorships of web sites. However, I respect the right of the web site not to get sued, so, we have worked out a compromise. I will keep using my colorful language and the editor and the legal folks can keep (*&%*) me. If you want the colorful version just to see what was said, I am sure if not positive, the editor keeps the originals to look back on and laugh.

    ~My Heroes

Okay Editor get ready! Well Ozites I have about had it with Mr. Greco and his crap arguments about the Charros. I have said this before and now even the General of Diversity in Oz has made it clear there is nothing wrong or illegal about the contracts and functions of the Charros. So, Mr. Greco can bite me. The Council had better watch their steps very carefully. They need votes from all sides. Oh wait, it was only Greco complaining, never mind.

I say to the council of Oz, what the hell, we can afford to ignore this (A$$&%#@) and not upset the fine citizens of Oz.!

The Charros are a breed unto themselves and can actually support themselves without asking the City for money and taxpayer dollars to subsidize them. In return they donate in huge measures to so many needs in education and child development so that the residents of this Emerald City actually have a shining star to look at in charity efforts for the community. A very nice group of people.

Okay Mr. Editor, here it comes. On the other hand we now seem to have an issue with none other than Oz’s own, um, ah, well, (situation).

It appears that a resident commissioner, and I think the head of this commission, has coerced his/her commission members to create an anti-bias ordinance in the City of Oz. And, get this; they want to include private businesses to this ordinance.

If I could back up the boat on this issue I would be very nervous, and I am glad it is still in the shop this week, but can any of you see a pretty large conflict of interest? Our charter officer/non-charter officer City attorney will conclude there is no conflict and that the commissioner benefits by getting a nice new toilet to pee in standing up?

However, this entity of some sort is also in the middle of a complaint she, it, whatever, filed with the Attorney Generals Office. Yep, the same one we cannot get to do anything for the normal folks when they come to his office. So, who is really being discriminated on here? This complaint filing stems from the fact that a local business owner, Tom Anderson, did not allow the not so pretty boy to hang his "Oscar Mayer" over the urinal while still standing up in the girls room, and the not so pretty boy did not want to go in the other room as people took pictures of it, I mean……AH…….. WHATEVER.

Now Scottsdale will enact an ordinance that says we have to have a bathroom marked "whatever" in all businesses of private ownership to accommodate an Oscar Mayer disguised as a Vagina. Yeah sure, ask for that in the beginning of an election season and see where that gets you! And since you did ask for this council decision, I may get my chance to still catch Larry Manross in drag trying to win those votes back as the Mayor is pretty much committed to the GLBT RUS, um whatever group.

There you go Mr. Editor as I wish you luck in editing this one to come out sounding right.

~ Bean Counter Jim carries a heavy load

Pay attention Ozites! Bean Counter Jim now holds a key to the Mayors voting pattern. As we all know, the Wicked Witch had no intention on pulling back the 4333 Building from DRB and she waited on the sideline with her yap shut to see where Jim was going on this issue.

You know, the stick your thumb out in the air approach and swing with the wind until you see what everyone else is going to say. Mary is indeed worried about who is going to challenge her and Bean Counter Jim and his manager are not stooges. There is no reason to commit to anything yet. There is plenty of time before you have to show your cards.

That bothers the Wicked Witch as she now has to vote in the blind, so to speak, and see if she can gauge which way the wind is blowing before she votes. Problem is this is a very dangerous time for people on both sides of issues and the fun is just beginning in the election season.

There are a couple of bonuses in this, though because if the residents speak loud enough, we can plant a road block in a lot of bullshit until after the election.

Then they go back to being themselves again, with the Wicked Witch keeping her yap shut and not continuing her interjection of "thoughts" after every Council member makes a comment on an issue she wants passed and they disagree with.

Hell, Bean Counter, I thought the Wicked Witch was just giving you the eye in the last couple of meetings and it never dawned on me that she is trying to figure out how you are going to vote before she starts popping off. Man is this going to be a ball buster of an election!

On a side note I heard from friends who attended a Republican event that none other than Ron, the flaming (A$$&%#@), McCullagh was working to get signatures to his petitions and people were not signing. I will guess that Ron will get his needed signatures after a long battle trying to find support from people who do not know him well enough to, "Just say NO!" After that Ronnie boy, it is still going to be a nightmare without the edge of political signs because there will be new comers who will be running.

    ~Thought for the Week

"It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man, who knows what the law is to-day, can guess what it will be to-morrow."

~Now that Jeff Kulaga (Mary's former assistant who left in total disgust we're told) will be the new Tempe city manager, can we expect more of our excellent, but disgruntled city employees to head toward the light of good ethics and honesty and away from the foreboding darkness of secrecy and stealth of the Mary & Jan show???

~ How funny, the Wicked Queen of Scottsdale all of a sudden has lip-lock and won't venture out with her opinion on a subject until she can be with the majority. Could it be an election is on the horizon? Oh my goodness, what a two-faced liar she is and I never noticed it before now. Pressure from groups that know the city's business better than she does is really telling on her isn't it? She screws up and they nail her to her cauldron rack. Let's get a strong mayoral candidate to replace her. God knows Scottsdale needs lot's of help after her mess-ups.

~ If Councilman Jim Lane expects to get re-elected to the council, he better start listening to the citizens instead of the developers and the Mary/Jan lovers. His vote on the church school will cost him dearly in the north and the vote on the Earll condos in the south is costing him dearly. The vast majority of Condos are sitting Idle, unsold and unrented, many being sold "short" (sold below what's owed the bank on them). Mr. Lane, get a grip and don't allow any more to be built or converted. You've got a long way to go to get our confidence back for you.

~WaterView, OrchidTree, and SummerTree are perfect examples of this administrations lack or planning, lack of standards and lack of, dare I say it, vision! It is also a perfect example of how our esteemed leadership sells out the best interests of Scottsdale residents to help developers make big $$$, then run off to some other unsuspecting city to do more dirty deeds, leaving Scottsdale taxpayer hung out to dry for the costs and repairs of an aging infrastructure.

~ Is it true that the proposed WaterView development sits in the middle of a Super Fund Site? OMG!! Maybe the developer wasn't paying attention or his "Hired Guns" just flat blew it for him! Oh, what a shame................. Tee Hee!

~ Why would Lisa Borowsky run for city council when we haven't seen or heard from her until now? Nice lady but probably a one issue candidate with little knowledge of the city or it's rich history.

~Thank you all for being alert to the DRB problem.  The DRB chairman has made very clear statements in the past that he believes that their decisions should have no oversight.  ALL commissions in Scottsdale are ADVISORY ONLY.  The City Council must clearly establish the procedures with DRB and all other commissioners that their votes are subject to Council oversight.    Summer break is not a time for developers to slide projects past the public's only body of appeal because of current time lines. DRB recommendations should be approved, appealed, or rejected by the City Council at a regularly scheduled Council meeting.  Note that some cities in the USA only "hear" re-zoning cases twice a year.  Imagine how stable zoning is in those communities with the result that developers there purchase land for use under the existing zoning rather than expect any-time, quick-profit re-zoning on demand.

~ Electing Nan Nesvig to the city council will help Nelssen, Littlefield and possibly Lane set a new, open, and positive course for the city of Scottsdale which is desperately needed after all the secrecy, dark and very costly decisions which we have been witnessing of late.  Got'cha covered Nan!

~ Watch the crafty legal department, Jan Dolan, and Mary Manross screw the citizens again from hearing the truth about Hualapai by settling with the owner of the property at the severe cost to the taxpayers in the millions. Just another learning experience Dolan lightly claims? How about giving the Mayor, the city manager, and the city attorney another leaning experience such as how does it feel to be fired for screwing over the taxpayers and the city for the umpteenth time!

~ Isn't it quite evident that Mother Mary is becoming a quick-change chameleon now that the election is coming? Notice how she waits to make her opinion known so she can be seen as being on the right side of an issue. What a low down lying (&%$#@), we need to vote this vermin out of office!

~ I was at Lisa's meeting. I think the woman has totally lost it. What a shame. One guy took her to task and she knew he had her cold turkey. Good man!

~ The management of SummerTree solicited those being thrown out of OrchidTree to be new tenants and now have given those same new residents of SummerTree notice that they to are converting to condos and they'll either have to buy their unit or move again. Where is the city in these cases? Why is this allowed to happen? Does the city require a complete fire suppression system when apartments are converted to condos? If not, why not? It's totally unfair to sell someone an old apartment renamed a condo with no major improvements or infrastructure upgrade in a building up to 50 years old.

~ Does John Washington live in Scottsdale or is he just a part time resident?

~ I wonder how many of the write-in candidates from the last election are going to throw their support behind Nan Nesvig when she takes out her papers? I hope all of them do. She's a perfect candidate; no chamber affiliation, doesn't work for anyone dealing with the city, doesn't own land in a development area, knows her business and that of the city, is highly ethical and honest, and learned a great lesson the last time out. Come on Nan, tell us you're running by taking out your papers.

~ Thank You Jim Heather for giving Lisa Haskell just a scant portion of what she certainly deserves for her gross hypocrisy and her turncoat way of doing things with people she wants to "help" her. Much sooner  than later, everyone will catch on to her nasty, back stabbing way of doing things and she'll be out there all by herself. To the city employee who told Jim to sit down, you sir were out of order and need to keep you mind on your own business. It's was obvious that because you couldn't answer necessary questions, you're only avenue of retreat was to attack Jim. We'll find out who you are and let the citizens know who and what you are too!

~ Why is it that some candidates for city council think that by belonging to the Chamber, they have an edge? Word to the wise, dump the chamber and become your own person. We won't vote for any "Chamber Clicker" for obvious reasons; what has the chamber done for the local residents lately? A big NOTHING!

~ A "Sound Off" comment in this months North Scottsdale Times derides Nancy Cantor for "being paid" for helping the tenants vacate OrchidTree. Sure she got paid: about 25 cents an hour! Where was your lazy candy ass when these people needed help?

~ Thanks to the attendees at the Meeting sponsored by Lisa Haskell Lisa was pilloried just as she should have been by many as was the city's Dave Rodrique who couldn't answer most of the questions asked and Lynne LeGuarde who tried to tell the attendees that they weren't asking for a subsidy, it was simply something like a "joint venture" between  the developer and the city. Bull Pucky, any Taxpayer monies given to a developer for ANY reason is a subsidy no matter how you cut it.

~ Who is this Joel Bramowithe guy? He rambles on more than almost anyone at council meetings. Excellent reason NOT to vote for him. We'll never get anything done if he hasn't got a clock stopping him from babbling on and on should he get elected.

~ Food for Thought, Take it or Leave it

     ~Cancer update from John Hopkins

    CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS

    1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

    2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

    3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

    4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

    5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and  including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

    6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

    7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

    8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

    9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

    10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

    11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

    CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

    a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table sal t has a chemical added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

    b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

    c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

    d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

    e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

    12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

    13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

    14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

    15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and  positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and  enjoy life.

    16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

CANCER UPDATE FROM JOHN HOPKINS HOSPITAL , U S - PLEASE READ

    1. No plastic containers in micro.

    2. No water bottles in freezer.

    3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.

Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.

Cover food with a paper towel instead.

This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.

~Democrats announce plan to stop illegal immigration

    By Craig J. Cantoni
    Sept. 14, 2007

Standing together on the Capitol steps yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced a Democrat plan to stop illegal immigration.

"Because Republicans are clueless about basic economics, they have failed to stop illegal immigration," said Pelosi. Reid added, "They don’t understand that as long as the United States ranks fourth on the Index of Economic Freedom while Mexico ranks forty-ninth, Mexicans will continue to cross the border."

The plan is elegant. It requires no border fence and no border agents. It simply requires a continued expansion of Democrat economic policies until the United States drops to forty-ninth place, at which time Mexicans will have no incentive to cross the border.

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman hailed the plan as "Brilliant!" And CNN commentator Lou Dobbs said, "It’s about time that we fight fire with fire and stop being patsies in the war of global competition."

The Index of Economic Freedom is published jointly by the Wall Street Journal and the Heritage Foundation. It measures 10 economic freedoms:

    1. Business Freedom, which exists when there are few impediments to starting a business.

    2. Trade Freedom, which exists when there are few trade barriers.

    3. Fiscal Freedom, which exists when the government limits the confiscation of earnings from the productive members of society.

    4. Freedom from Government, which exists when government spending is low.

    5. Monetary Freedom, which exists when the government doesn’t print money to cover excess government spending.

    6. Investment Freedom, which exists when there are few restrictions on foreign investment.

    7. Financial Freedom, which exists when there is transparency and competition in banks and other financial institutions.

    8. Property Rights, which exist when the government protects private property instead of taking it.

    9. Freedom from Corruption, which exists when the government fights corruption instead of aiding and abetting it.

    10. Labor Freedom, which exits when the government does not dictate wages and terms of employment between employers and employees.

There is a direct connection between economic freedom and prosperity. For example, countries that rank in the top fifth of the Index of Economic Freedom have nearly six times the per-capita gross domestic product as countries in the bottom fifth.

Pelosi and Reid explained that the anti-immigration plan will accelerate the growth in regulations, taxes, redistribution, spending, public-sector employment, entitlements, trade barriers, the minimum wage, labor laws, earmarks, and money in politics.

"Sure, the Republicans did a lot of this, but not nearly enough," said Pelosi. She went on to say that a side benefit of the plan is that it will end the unfairness and injustice of some people having more money than others, and, specifically, of Americans being richer than Mexicans. "We will no longer be despised by Mexico and the rest of the third world," she said.

The plan was immediately applauded by public-sector unions, teachers’ unions, anti-globalization groups, environmentalists, mainline churches, liberal arts professors, and children’s advocates. It was even cheered by right-wing talk-radio hosts, who said that the plan will prove that they have been right all along about the willingness of Americans to work as lettuce pickers, dish washers, gardeners, and maids.

Over the next year, representatives of various stakeholder groups will be working together with elected officials and citizen activists to create comprehensive, transformational property tax reform bills and initiatives to include:

    ·         Eliminating classes of property

    ·         Resetting the property tax rate back to no more than 1%, the maximum allowed in the Arizona Constitution

    ·         Setting a 2% annual limit to valuation increases after a property is purchased

    ·         Rolling back current valuations to 2001

    ~ Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund

The Scottsdale Activist is very pleased to announce an effort on the behalf of the residents and taxpayers of the city of Scottsdale to promote open, honest and accountable city government. The Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund (SLDF) has been created to take legal action to hold the City accountable when its actions are contrary to state law, the City Charter, City ordinances or the public interest.

The most necessary ingredient to make the SLDF work will be confidential contributions from concerned Scottsdale citizens who are willing to help their community.  By contributing, we can change the way City Hall does business and insure that our tax dollars will be spent wisely.

No funds from the SLDF will or can be used for any political purpose.

Contributions shall be kept confidential as permissible by law and can be made in any Washington Mutual Bank to account number 3114165786 for the Scottsdale Legal Defense Fund. Branch locations are listed below. Contributions are not tax deductible.

The SLDF has retained the law firm of Miller LaSota & Peters, PLC, in connection with the patently illegal action taken by the Mayor and Council appointing the most recent Scottsdale City Attorney, while ignoring the residency requirement of the Scottsdale City Charter even though the new City Attorney’s contract (according to Scottsdale Republic reporter Laurie Roberts) requires that she reside in Scottsdale.  The City Council action was based on a legal opinion which was reportedly rendered during a closed door Executive Session of the City Council by a subordinate to the then acting City Attorney, who was subsequently appointed to the City Attorney position by a vote during a public City Council meeting. The opinion has been requested as a public document under state law, but the City has not yet provided it. The SLDF will take other appropriate legal actions based on the conduct of the Mayor and Council.

Washington Mutual Bank Locations at which contributions to the SLDF can be made are:

    72nd & Shea                    7337 E. Shea Blvd #120                480-609-8524
